Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Support Group

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), is an acquired immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nervous system (i.e. not the brain or spinal cord). It is suggested that it is an autoimmune disease, in which the sufferer's immune system is triggered into damaging the nerve covering. Many cases developed in people who received the 1976 swine flu vaccine.

I never figured out what caused me to get GBS nor did my physician. I'm curious if anyone has ever put it together and figured it out. Maybe that will help me to solve this mystery as to what caused this.

I got GBS after a bout of the flu, then my immune system went haywire and turned on my neurvous system. It started to destroy the sheath that protects the nerves,and most of my body got paralyzed.Then it attacked my lungs and I needed to be put on a resirator.
Many things can trigger it, the flu, flu shot,intestinal infection. You should go to www.gbs-cidp.org for more information.

My father in law paralyzed from the waist down one night, not even a week post having the flu shot, 2 years ago.
Still cannot walk on his own, in therapy since.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is not hereditary or contagious. What causes GBS is not known; however, in about half of all cases the onset of the syndrome follows a viral or bacterial infection, such as the following:

Campylobacteriosis (usually from eating undercooked poultry)
Flu (influenza), common cold
Gastrointestinal viral infection
HIV
Infectious mononucleosis
Porphyria (rare disease of red blood cells)
Viral hepatitis
A small number of cases have been known to occur after a medical procedure, such as minor surgery

I was on a short vacation in Munich and got food poisoning. A week later the GBS satrted and the Doctors were convinced the two were related.

They say 1 out of 100,000 people get. For me I got mine right after having a double kidney infection,my doctor said that was more then likely the cause.

I am a GBS veteran (1995). Complete Neck down. A sensational help (more than that really) was the above website. I know I recommended this to others here and have had replies of thanks re: recommendation as the empathy they found was mind-blowing.
