Graves' Disease Support Group
Graves-Basedow disease is a medical disorder that may manifest several different conditions including hyperthyroidism (over activity of thyroid hormone production), infiltrative exophthalmos (protruberance of one or both eyes and associated problems) and infiltrative dermopathy (a skin condition usually of the lower extremities). This disorder is the most common cause of...
Hi! I stubbled on this group while doing research about Graves because I am fairly sure at this point, this could be what's happening to me. I am a 28 year old female and have been suspicious of a thyroid imbalance for at least 4 years now. As I keep reading and reflecting on my past, I now suspect this could have been happening since I was maybe 7 years old, if that's possible? I'm hoping you may be helpful in pointing me in the right direction...
Since puberty I have seemed to sweat more than the average female, no matter the temperature or clothing I wear. I have battled depression off and on since I was about 7 years old, something I thought was related to my father living with depression my whole life and other life stessors/trauma. I have also been treated for anxiety and panic attacks (often seeking out info on my thyroid, not anxiety/depression). Reflecting back, there have definitely been phases that I would consider, "hypomanic," where I WAY increase my drinking, sexual activity, spending loads of money on a whim, and making all around horrible, wreckless decisions. In the past few years, I have grown increasingly angry at the tiniest things and treated people with a rage that has left me with a very, very small group of friends/family. The older I get, the more I become easily distracted, confused, have incredible difficulty explaining my thoughts to others. I have experienced a number of significant traumas in my life but noticed the symtpoms became much, much worse after my boyfriend of 13 years suddenly died of a heart attack when we were 24 years old (November 2013). In the 2 months after this event, I lost my appetite and about 40-50 lbs. Not long after this weight loss, I noticed consistent, daily tremors in my hands, insane hot flashes that literally make me want to crawl out of my skin or die, off and on all day long, nausea about 75-90% of the time (it fluctuates), diarrhea about 70% of the time, extreme fatigue and tiredness, and really restless sleep - tossing and turning all night long - paired with night sweats so bad that now I just sleep wrapped in bath/beach towels because I soak through my clothes and sheets every single night, no matter the temperature. The constant hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, nausea, and tremors feel like they are killing me slowly. I have come up with lots of strategies to cope with these symptoms over the years but I'm tired and they only continue to get worse. My nausea has never resulted in vomitting until about 3 days ago and I am increasingly concerned this is a more serious issue but also could be freaking myself out? I guess these things have intensified in recent years but to some extent were always present in my life. I feel SO out of control. I have seen 4 doctors and they all diagnossed me with depression and put me on meds. Anti-depressants have almost never made me feel better, they make me feel like a zombie and never manage the more physical symptoms. I do have all of the symptoms of depression and I guess it is possible that is a mental health concern but my body physcially just doesn't feel right. I have also considered it may be related to gluten intolerance or another GI related issue and have recently learned there are significant connections between these 2 systems. Almost all women in my mother's side of the family, except my mother, have experienced some sort of thyrpid imbalance beginning in their early 30s.
I feel so out of control, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Everything feels like chaos, ALL the time. I can't find any concrete answers. Does this sound like Graves or your experience? Is it possible to live with Graves undiagnosed for 20 years? I am seeing a naturopath next week and hope I get more info/tests but I've been failed by doctors so many times now. I want to go prepared and be pushy, if need be.
Any information would be so, so appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time to hear me out.
I am sorry that you have experiencing a lot of symptoms. Yes, it is possible to go through undiagnosed for many, many years.
See if your naturopathic doctor can order the TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and possibly the thyroid antibodies tests such as the TSI and the TRAb to check for Graves' Disease and the TPOab and the TgAb to check for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
Many of us with thyroid issues do find that we have problems with gluten as well with other food sensitivities as well as sensitivities to household and personal products used. I've had to look for safer cleaning products and personal products to keep my thyroid settled down as much as possible.

My family scapegoated me all these years -- sneered at any thing 'wrong' that I did, and didn't seek good medical care for me.
I have since been away from the abusive family of origin for years, felt much better, and actually found that I have hyper thyroid and possibly non-antibody Grave's Disease when I got fertility testing lab panel.
I too looked back and wondered if this flew under the radar for a long, long time. Thank you mmztcass for your knowledge and encouragement on this board :)
Ever want to talk, please reach out to me.
