It makes me wonder about here in the USA. One gal from another thyroid site said something about Nevada being higher than normal and maybe possibly New Mexico. In those two states I have read we have more military stuff going on.

I have heard of a place in Eastern Washington that had a some sort of raideation leack that whent on for a few years that caused thyroid cancer and a lot of people to go hypO as well. The leak was RAI and it spread a long way too. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the city of the reactor.

Funny I turned to Dr.Oz and he is doing a story on deadly drinking water in the USA. Maybe it is water related!!!!!

I would not doubt it one bit if it was in the water.
If it goes in the air then when it rains the rain brings it back down and then into the water table it goes!
I really wish there was somethign we could do about it all!!

I was wondering about this also. When I went to my RAI class last week there was only one other graves patient and 10 cancer patient in the other class. The nurse said that was normal to have 10 thyroid cancer patients undergoing RAI. She said that thyroid cancer is so common now and it is as she put it raising. What are we eating and drinking?

Eek...! I know, what a scary thought to think about our water supply being contaminated. I have even read that because the population don't dispose of the old meds properly, these gets leaked into our supposedly fresh water supply.

I often wonder the same thing! Growing up in So. California, drinking Los Angeles County water. My entire family has thyroid disease (mom, dad, both sisters and myself - and now my 11 year old niece who lives in that area).
Is there a connection? Hmm...definately makes you think.

I think your on to something Malbers. I also think that the stresses of everyday life contribute to it as well. Life has changed so much over the last 25 years. Most households need a two parent income just to survive. Technology has aided in that stress. We welcome this into our everyday lives but the down side is you cant escape. You are never...off. I know for me..I was in a constant state of..fight or flight. I always went to bed with things still not done. Just not enough hours in the day. I believe stress played a big role in my developing Graves...Big Hugs...Kathy

I too believe like Kathy that stress triggered my Graves. We may have things lying under the surface like this that may have never come out if not for stress. There are an awful LOT of people with thyroid disease out there. I come across them in my day to day life all the time. It's unbelievable!

I also know that there are hormone disrupters in our water and every day things. One is plastic.
In Spokane there are a few pharmacys that will take unused meds and recylce them. I am not sure how they do that, but they keep them from going into the water table and keeping everyone safe.
I know my GD is genetic. My greatgrandmother had a goiter and had to have her thyroid removed. I think my grandma had it but before I could ask she passed on. My mother found out that she had it 3 years ago after I told her I had GD and it was genetic and to get herself test. He had been diagnosed as hypO for the past 30 years and she was hypER ( the same thing tha thappend to me except mine was cought after a year of being treated for being hypO when I was not) SO I am hoping my daughter dose not get it and if she dose, she has me to help teach her how to take care of herself.

I think everyone's on the right track here. Stress is what prompted my Graves but it was also genetically there waiting to be activated. I read a study when I was first diagnosed that showed hot spots for thyroid activity and unfortunately one of them was only a couple of miles away from where I was living. According to the study, it was more a case of what the wate lacked then what was in it. In an area to the west of the town I live in the water is missing a certain mineral so they have to bring water in for drinking. Approximately 80% of the people in that area have thyroid trouble.
