Graves' Disease Support Group
Graves-Basedow disease is a medical disorder that may manifest several different conditions including hyperthyroidism (over activity of thyroid hormone production), infiltrative exophthalmos (protruberance of one or both eyes and associated problems) and infiltrative dermopathy (a skin condition usually of the lower extremities). This disorder is the most common cause of...
I am so sorry that you had a reaction. I can't take sulfa drugs either, and my mom is allergic to them, too. I think the antibiotic you get prescribed is supposed to depend on what type of bug you might have, like whether its an aerobic bug or an anaerobic bug.
Here is a website about treating sinus infections with antibiotics:
http://www.sinusinfectionhelp.com/antibiotic.html
For instance, Penicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan, which is an essential structural cell wall component for gram positive bacteria, so if you have a gram negative bacterial infection, it might not be that helpful.
So, they should probably prescribe you an antibiotic that is multispectrum and can take out a wider variety of bugs, and the antibiotics that inhibit protein or DNA synthesis, would probably be better to try.
Fluoroquinolones like Ciprofloxacin, are a wide spectrum antibiotic, so your doctor might be tempted to prescribe this one, however, people who are on synthroid may have an adverse reaction with ciprofloxacin as is shown in this article by Mary J. Shomon:
http://thyroid.about.com/b/2008/02/28/ciprofloxacin-interacts-with-thyroid-replacement-therapy.htm
I personally have never had a problem with the class of antibiotics called Macrolides, which inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria, and the drug that I am mostly given is Erythromycin. Have you ever taken that kind? If you aren't allergic, I would recommend that one to try, but again, I'm not a doctor. I haven't found any research showing any interactions between Macrolides and synthroid, though, and it has worked well for me in the past, and is my standard go to antibiotic when I get sick.
There is a website called "Drug.com" where you can check for interactions between synthroid and other drugs. I have checked on the interactions between synthroid and euthromycin and didn't find any:
http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/erythromycin-with-synthroid-1009-0-1463-869.html
Here is the result from when I checked for interactions between ciprofloxacin and synthroid:
http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php?drug_list=672-0,1463-869
It looks like it confirms the information in the Mary Shomon article. So, I'd ask your doctor about erythromycin.
I hope you feel better, soon!

Pampered....I am on Bactrim DS right now for a toe infection that two rounds of Cephlexin did not help clear up. I'm not having any new issues since starting it. Like Hannah said, I'm not a doctor either, but it sounds more like an allergic reaction than an issue with thyroid disease.
I hope you feel better real soon. Sinus pain is HORRENDOUS!
