My son has Graves, he had RAD two years ago and was doing fine, now he is ill tempered, not sleeping, back and legs hurting. Now they tell him he is way hyper again and they are gonna try and make him hypo again to see if that will help. They say he may have a hot nodule and if meds don't work then another round of RAD does this sound right?

Couldn't you post your son's lab results, the last three together with what meds he's on and how much to get an idea of what's going on...?

Yes, we need to know what his most recent labs are (find out, ask for a copy) what meds he's on and if the doctor is just testing his tsh. (ditto Mm)

Hi Snippy,

Men have smaller, but denser thyroid glands then women. So the RAI can not work the first or second time. Since that's hard to live through, in my opinion, I alawys think men should skip the second or third RAI and just go straight for surgery as long as they have insurance to help them financially.

Graves' is extra hard on men that have a family to support. I had enough trouble taking care of myself.

The hard part is that as usual I can't get him to listen to me. He is dealing with moods swings that are out of control I think. He may be 35 but if were in SC where he is I would grab him by the neck make make him open his ears and listen. He thinks O'well I 'll get over it.

Mood swings and being out of control may be symptoms of his out of control thyroid levels. I know it must be so difficult to feel not able to help him, but trust that your wonderful son is still in there, and one day he will return. It's a difficult path he has chosen .

Sometimes all a parent can do with a grow child is continue to love them during their difficult times.
