Hi! I know it can be confusing in the beginning. Your dose SHOULD be lowered when your labs reflect a change to more hypo. It takes about 2 months to see the change in your labs though, at least that's what my doc said. You might not be showing the real labs yet. How long were you on the 5 mgs when you had the labwork done? You also have to KNOW your lab range. Every lab is different. Here's mine:
free t-4 (0.80-1.80)
free t-3 (2.3-4.2)
tsh-(0.35-5.5)
find out where you are in the range for your lab and it might help more.

I have my blood work done monthly and have never had 2 tests in a row even close to each other. Like i said my doc just keeps changing my dose, it has changed every month.Hypo one month than hyper again and i think its because the dose is changed drastically every month. One month its 4 pills daily next month 1.5 next month 3 next month 1. One and a half is too much and half is not enough so i will try 1 pill daily for the next month. I have been trying to keep track of doses relating to how i feel and maybe i will be the one to get it right. not sure if labs numbers are different in canada but if your t4 range is .80-1.80 and mine is 7.5 to 21.1 something doesnt make sense.all my endo said was MY NORMAL. Well i havent been "normal" for a long long time!! lol

The buck stops at your TSH being undetectable. That TSH is WAYYYY hyper. Low TSH is hyper and high TSH is Hypo. Low T3 & T4 are hypo and High T3 & T4 are hyper.

The endo explained that the tsh may not register for a while. I have had undectectable tsh since my diagnoses. My t4 suggests hypo and by the way i feel i think its true. When hyper i can eat all day long and never be full, the last few days every time i eat i am full fast and stay full for hours.

I think you're being given the plain t-4 lab not the free, you need to have your free t-4 tested. Yes the tsh CAN be suppressed in Graves for a long while, even though the frees are in hypo range. It has something to do with the tsi antibodies, so he's right. Graves can't be solely treated by tsh alone. I know people who are on methimazole who take it 2 or 3 times a day, they say it's better broken up for them, so they don't get hyper or hypo swings. My doc had said 10 mgs and over should be taken 2 times a day. I never took this much, always on a small dose, 2.5 or 5. My t-4 range:

t-4 (not free) (4.5-12.0)

No unfortunatly it is free t4 so im still confused with the different lab ranges.

I also screwed upon my first post. The last three months of free t4 where April 21.1 May 31.9 June 5.5. Except for the last month i had only been taking 5mg daily and still going hyper. in the last 30 days my dose was 7.5. It seem strange that with such a small increase the my numbers would change so much. Again confused.

If those are Free T3's & T4's, then the whole panel is consistent with hyperthyroid results, I hope that helps. I have both Hashi's and Graves (autoimmune hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism so I am use to having mixed results on my panels, i usually have a hypo TSH and hyper Free T3's and Free T4's. I hope this helps, i love looking at labs but I am not an expert.

It helps more than you know. What tests are done for hashimoto? My aunt was diagnosed last week . Maybe i could have both as well the way i swing between both.

Well, I still think it's consistent with hyperthyroid. But the test for Hashimoto's is antibodies blood test called TPO ab (thyroid peroxidase antibodies). NOw these TPO's can be present in Graves, but I was initially found hypothyroid and diagnosed with Hashi's with a TSH of 8.11 and FRee T3 & T4 that were both high, BUT I DID HAVE BOTH GRAVES & HASHIs at that time, just not figured it out. Sometimes my TSH comes in at .006. On or off thyroid meds. My TPO labs have ranged 533 /ml to 2,070 /ml of blood, that pretty high, but of course others have had higher. I have heard of someone with TPO's at 164,000 with Hashi's. Between the two, I am more on the hyperthyroid side all the time cause i am thin, but i have mixed symptoms of both hypo and hyper, but one usually predominates more than the other like Graves. Cold Feet is hypo, heat intolerance/hotflashes/tremors is hyper. The easiest way for me to tell without a test. Both hypo and hyper will make your hair fall out. Hypo is overweight. Hyper is underweight. I have had a lot of confusion in interpreting the status of my thyroid, so i have learned a lot of stuff.

Thank you for all the info. I am usually hyper as well, always sweaty. I seem to function better hyper than hypo. When im hypo im in so much pain, everything aches and im extra grouchy.
