Clueless doc! She's going by your TSH. You are NOT in a hyperactive state like she says. Maybe she should keep up to date on things and she'll have a better understanding of how to treat her patients. Perhaps, print and have her read the below article.

Your thyroid function "suggests" a hyperthyroid state because a TSH like yours *might* indicate hyperthyroidism.

However, if the doctor was aware of the ground-breaking study jjbrookes linked for you, she would have done what ALL thyroid-savvy doctors do and look at your actual hormone levels to determine thyroid status, not pituitary hormone TSH.

Based upon your lab's ranges, a healthy person would have FT4 at least 1.25 if not higher - you are hyPO and need a lower dose.
(ATD dosing is always based upon the FT4 level. For whatever it's worth, no one would feel good with your FT3 level, either)

And, the doctor also demonstrates further her lack of knowledge. Just because TSI level greater than 140 usually means positive for Graves' and your level is lower does NOT mean you don't have Graves'.

Your level probably improved as a result of taking methimazole.

Healthy people would have TSI less than 2.

I don't know why she wants you to have a radioactive study of your thyroid gland - the test is outdated and inconclusive. The only thing it's "good" for is to give the nuclear medicine people a guesstimate as to how much radioactive iodine to use if you opted for RAI.

And this is a world known hospital. I'm so frustrated, I went in with printed material and they would not even look t it said they didn'tknow where I was getting my info but it was wrong. I saw three docs not one that day. I don't know which way to go here since I have no insurance at this time and am under a program at UAB to get my medical care. I know one thing for sure they will not talk me into surgery or radiation. I think when I get home this weekend I will just FAX my material to them as it is n 72 mile trip one way.

Snippy..I am so sorry you have to deal with this. The fact that you went to a world known hospital is of little meaning. My 2nd Endo had just finished 17 years of Endo school so I thought...yay...he's on top of all the new info on thyroid treatment...NOT...he too wanted to dose me by my TSH. I only saw him twice...the 2nd time I went to him...I had to lie to him and trick him into giving me the antibody tests. Once I got that test done...I never went back. Luckily for me...I have a great GP...she also has Graves so she knows her stuff.

The link that jj gave you is a medical journal of endocrinology. This is the stuff docs are supposed to be reading in order to keep current. Take that article in with you and insist the look at it. Make some noise if they refuse.

Ohhh I forgot to say...in the mean time do what a lot of us had to do...tell the docs what they want to hear in order to get the meds and then do your own dosing changes. I know we are not supposed to do this but its our bodies and we have a right to feel well. Do not do the scan.
