I just had an uptake scan yesterday with the radioactive iodine. They say I have hyperthyroidism, my T3 and T4 high and TSH almost 0. I have all the symptoms: rapid heart rate, diarrhea, night sweats, weakness, etc.
My endo had me do the uptake scan yesterday to determine the cause. I do not know the results yet. Tomorrow I will find out my treatment.
My question is I teach preschool music and movement classes. Tonight when I was trying to sing with the kids and parents along with my guitar, I completely lost my voice, it just got stuck! I kept trying to clear my frog in my voice but it isnt going away. I am scared that this is permanent. Is it a result of the radiation and scan? or I am praying it is a cold coming on. My throat feels swollen and a tiny bit of pain.
Any experience with this after the radiation? will it go away?

I will let others step in with the links of info to read about the Uptake Scan and RAI. Basically it is not necessary to check if you have Graves' by doing this test. Simple blood tests called the TSI (Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulins) and TRAb (Thyroid Receptor Antibodies) will check for Graves'.
Unfortunately too many doctors out there are using outdated tests and are not properly treating thyroid patients. This is for both hypER and hypO.
I am unable to tell you how long it will take for you to get your voice back. :-(
Were you given any instructions to stay away from little kids for a period of time with the Uptake Scan you had?

I asked the tech if I should stay away from kids, he said no that the amount of radiation in the uptake scan was lower than in an xray. I was also worried about my pets, cat and dog. But he said it was fine. Is that correct??? Damage done now thought,...
I have been reading the discussions on elaine moore, very helpful. But havent come across anything on hoarseness from the uptake scan. As I already had the scan, will it determine if I have Graves?
It is hard to question a Dr. who is supposed to be knowledgable isnt it?
