I can't answer for those who have had an RAI and didn't do well. Some do and some do. Unfortunately there's no easy fix for any thyroid problem.
I use a small doses of MMI (Methimazole) for the last seven years now. I had only a small hypER blip for several months when I ate wrong and took the 'wrong' supplements that got me hypER again.
The key here is to research, research, and research all you can. Read thyroid people's blogs. Figure out what to do that fits your needs best.
Read my posts (do a search) and you'll see that if one decides to stay on ATD (antithyroid drug), it's not very hard to keep stable with getting labs done of the Free T3 and the Free T4 and make the necessary slight dose adjustments. Some people stay forever on the same doses. Also watching out for the 'triggers' in your diet.

Mine includes: Iodine, Soy, dairy(because of the cows udders washed in Iodine), MSG, Aspartame, seafood, Red #3,etc.
