Graves' Disease Support Group
Graves-Basedow disease is a medical disorder that may manifest several different conditions including hyperthyroidism (over activity of thyroid hormone production), infiltrative exophthalmos (protruberance of one or both eyes and associated problems) and infiltrative dermopathy (a skin condition usually of the lower extremities). This disorder is the most common cause of...

I am guessing you are still in the 'hot' phase and not 'cold' at this point.

Getting your levels at a good place helps tremendously and giving your body the nutrients required to heal your immune system is also very important...as mmz mentioned.
I used the stick on prisms...they are quite inexpensive and easily changed if stronger ones are necessary. I had mine changed 2 or 3 times. They were a god send for me.
I would not even consider a TT at this point. Getting your levels at a good place is where your focus should be...we can help you with that if you post your lab results along with your ranges and med doses...Big Hugs...Kathy
My plan is to keep my thyroid intact, at least for the foreseeable future. And probably the orthoptist was right to give it a few weeks before considering a different prism, given how quickly my eyes seem to be changing. Stick on prisms aren't as expensive as grinding a lens, but they still can add up. After a week with one lens occluded, however, I'm ready to spring for another prism. The double vision has been constant for 6 months, intermittent for a few months before that. I'm not sure if that's considered a long time, but it sure seems like a long time to me. Is that a short enough time to maybe get a little better? Or is my brain too confused?
I too have been frustrated with my double vision and the ever changing health of my eyes.
I had a press on prism for 2 months and then switched to a ground in prism when my vision coverage allowed it. (The press on prism wasn't working for me - I had horrible headaches and vertigo.) That worked for a few months and then my vision resolved. I was SUPER EXCITED, but of course then my vision was poor because I didn't have another pair of glasses with my current prescription without the prism. Unfortunately, I am back to having double vision but I can use my original pair of glasses :-)
This whole process has taken place over 2 1/2 years; 6 months with press on prism, 3-4 months ground in prism, 4-6 months no double vision and now about a year of double vision again.
So the approach I have taken is "a day at a time". I know I will have good days and maybe even some great days here and there. Overall I am feeling better. When my eyes finally stabilize, then I will make decisions regarding surgery. I try not to get too ahead of myself because then I get frustrated.
Journaling has helped me track my progress. I go back and read my journals when I am having bad days. It is at those times that I realize I am making progress. Journaling helps to remind me that I have to continue to nourish my body, manage my stress and make good lifestyle choices.

Some observations from this journey so far: It seems that when my FT3 is up even a little I don't feel well. When my levels change, up or down, my eyes have a big change in relation to the double vision.
( I noticed this trend looking back at my journal. I, too, have found journaling helpful.).
Ranges FT4( .8-1.8), FT3( 2.3-4.2), TSH (0.2-4.5)
8/29/13 FT4 3.2, FT3 13.2, TSH less than 0.03, TRab 3.01 (less than 1.75) Started on methimazole 20mg/day.
10/16/13 FT4 0.8,Ft3 2.8, TSH less than 0.03 Decreased to 15 mg/day, continue with atenolol 25mg/day. After 1 week on 15mg, decreased to 10mg
11/14/13 FT4 0.4, FT3 1.7, TSH 5.74 Endo wanted to decrease to 5mg/every other day (we compromised on 2.5mg daily).tapering off atenolol.
12/12/13 FT4 1.1, FT3 2.9, TSH 0.05 TRAb 6.05 (less than 1.75) Continued MMI 2.5mg daily
1/10/14 FT4 1.3, FT3 4.0 TSH less than 0.03 MMI 3.75mg daily (divided into 2.5mg in am, 1.25mg in pm) atenolol 25mg added back
2/6/14 FT4 1.3, FT3 4.2, TSH less than 0.03 MMI 3.75mg daily, atenolol 25mg daily
3/24/14 FT4 1.8, FT3 6.7. TSH less than 0.03 MMI 5mg daily
4/30/14 FT4 1.4, FT3 4.4, TSH less than 0.03 Endo hasn't called yet with dosing directions.
Kim, I love your attitude! I'm trying to take not only a "day at a time", but some days I need to take an "hour at a time" to get through the work day. I'm kind of hoping it doesn't take quite as long for my eyes to stabilize, but if it does, it's nice to have the support and advice on this board to get through.
4/30/14 FT4 1.4, FT3 4.4, TSH less than 0.03 Increased to 7.5mg daily (a little nervous about that, but I do still have hyper symptoms. Hope I don't go hypo again...)
