In my post regarding "Terminate Family Reunification" I stated I received a letter of recommendations from the SW for the next court hearing dated: April 6th.
I received a full version of the SW recommendations on Tuesday. In this full version it stated that we will be adopting him...and DCFS recommends we do. What concerned me was on the page titled "Evaluation of Child. It stated that my GS has no Medical, Developmental, and Mental or Emotional needs and he is not a client of Regional Ctr.
My GS's SW dropped the ball! At our 1st court hearing and the DCFS MAT Eval. meeting for my GS stated that my GS should be assessed @ Regional Ctr. due to the fact his bio mother was doing drugs & alcohol during her pregnancy and has admitted to all this and the years of abuse and documented.
I got tired of waiting and started the ball rolling by connecting with our local Regional Ctr. via email and they sent my SW a packet to fill out so my GS would be accessed back in Sept 2010. Also my GS has been accepted in a program study for children exposed to alcohol & drugs that will starts in May. This program will teach us how to learn to help my GSs developmental issues that go along with the brain damage those things do to a child. My GS doesn't have full blown FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) however; we are at the point with signs of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). Which shows in areas of developmental, emotional and Sensory issues?
I took off work yesterday and today for SW monthly visit and advocate for my GS because clearly the SW didn't follow through.
I called our local Grandparents as Parents Federally funded Org. and spoke to one of the workers and they told me to contact the SW regarding the status on my GS's assessment I did by calling the Regional Ctr. office and she told me they would contact the SW to ask about the packet so they can move forwarded with GSs assessment.
I then called one of the Legal Aids at the Grandparents as Parents office which happens to be located in the Children's Court House where our hearing will be on the 6th. They offered to be with us when we go to court on the 6th if we want. Also the legal aid told me that he will also look into my issues with other members and my GS's lawyer.
I also emailed my email communication with the babys SW regarding Regional Ctr. assessment and how it was never followed through on his part. I ended my email stating that I was concerned that when we go to this hearing on the 6th that the court records will show there is no medical or developmental issues when he was never accessed!
Did I miss anything? I just want to make sure that my GS has a medical/developmental plan in place before adoptions. My husband & I are close to retirement and what if something happens to us and there is no Medical plan for my GS in place. We also need to know what type of special needs my GS will need and what help we will advocate for him.
Thanks for your support,
Judi

i caution you to be patient. If your sw has recommended the parents not get the child back, you are extremely fortunate. It is next to impossible to get that done. She may have noted there were no problems because of his age. While you may see symptoms the majority of the problems may not expose themselves until he is in school. He is still in the early development of his brain. The bottom line is that you need to work w/in the system to get things done, even though the system may be imperfect. If she is making these recommendations, she is on your (and your gs) side. While you may be right in your assumptions of sw, I recommend you work with her instead of against her. It seems you have good support to see you through this so trust in them. I'm not sure I understand what you expect of a medical/developmental plan but no one can predict exactly how much, if any, brain damage has occurred. I know there are many here who have gc with FAS and hope they will be able to advise you on this. I w/suggest you arrange who will take gs if anything happens to you. You probably s/speak to a lawyer regarding this because I'm not sure the normal type of will be the best vehicle to use.
