Grandparents Raising Children Support Group
This community is dedicated to grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. In cases where the parents are not willing or able to provide adequate care for their children, grandparents may take on the role of primary caregivers. I received a flyer saying they were offering this training to foster care and families. I received it 4 days before the workshop and waited and waited to get an email back saying we were registered. I forgot about it only to realize last night that it was schedule for today. I decided to just take the day off and go...
Sure enough they never even checked their email after they said email or call to register. My name wasn't on their list. I showed the lady the email I sent and she apologized and added my name and told me it was fine to attend.
This workshop covered Trauma issues in children. That was my favorite part out of the whole workshop. The speaker was a Dr who has been working mainly with children who has many different traumas in their life. He mentioned that there is a fairly new treatment plan that they use for children with this.
The rest of the speaker were ok...it was weird to hear how different Dr's talk about boundaries and the reward system. When my son was young this very expensive Dr had us do a program that we would take away things or activities and now this Dr said it wasn't a good plan anymore...
They also spoke about Whooping Cough...We are experiencing a high cycle right now and all children along with Elementary and Middle School age need the shots.
I was disappointed that they didn't cover children who were exposed to drugs, poor diet, and smoking in the womb. I left a comment on the Eval sheet they gave us saying it would be nice if they would have a speaker speak about solutions to help these kids.
There will be another workshop in Oct...I hope that they cover other issues...

I would love to go to some seminars on this, but unfortunately I live in an area where there is nothing like this within 70 miles. :P. Sounds like it was a productive time! :)
