Well, I have been going back and forth figuring out how I could afford not to work this year because it has been very stressful and busy due to all the medical issues my gs has along with taking time off from work to help him. Well, I now am faced with making that decision...I just got Bumped/Displaced meaning 22 people in our School District got laid off and our contract allows them to take another person's job with the same classification with fewer years worked than them. Well, I received my noticed last week so did other employees The School District had vacant positions available for all of us to be placed in; the only problem is my placement is a further distance from the Medical Fragile Preschool that my GS goes to than my present job. The preschool opens at 6:30 and the new job starts at 7 a.m. I will be late everyday! Here are other issues; the job has fewer work months per year than my present job, the principal at this school is known as a difficult person to work with and this School is 80% Hispanic families and I don't speak Spanish.
I am so upset over this and I am thinking of taking unemployment instead if I can. The UI website states it has to be good cause that I don't take the placement because the School District is offering me another job. I know that it may be hard to find a job in our area however; I would be on a 39 month rehire if the School District gets any opening during that time, however; they will have to offer others because of the years work order. I did ask our HR depart. If they had any part time jobs available and they told me; none right now.
We went through our finances and we can survive if we're frugal. We have been blessed with our first monthly subsidy check that the nonprofit legal org who has been advocating for us for many of my gs's medical and therapy issues just got for us throw DCFS. I do have fears, thou that it can be taken away because our State has financial issues. The subsidy amount is less than my pay however; it now gives me choices of time to find another job either full or part-time. I was told that my gs will receive this subsidy until he turns 18. Thank God, my GS will be able to go to the preschool he goes to because of his medical issues. In fact, he can go there instead of the school district preschool for handicap children.
I really need to regroup after all the stress and fast pace my life has been this last two yrs since I took my grandson. Now, that I can't do a vacation or leave because of the new placement I am forced to take I do have to make a decision on whether I should just let this job go....I also have been having lots of pain in my right hand...It maybe Carpal tunnel; I noticed when I took a typing test over a yr ago when I applied for a higher paying job within our School District, my score kept being 10 WPM LESS than I did a yrs earlier. I didn't have to work so hard when testing before...I know I'm getting old however; the new job placement comes with a lot more typing than my present job. Has anyone ever had Carpal Tunnel? It also could be RA...my mom has bad RA and I had seen a RA Dr Years ago who told me I may get early RA because it runs in families.
I even asked our HR dept. if there were any part-time jobs available and she said no. I am just screwed in my choices. I have been getting more involved with the Originations that are involved with my GS. I was told that I could do some research for this nonprofit org. for children's rights it wouldn't be full time but it would be something I could do at home.
Sorry, this is so long....It does help me to post here because #1 all you understand how our lives change in many ways and all the stress that comes with raising children again at our age.... I do believe in myself and I have learned that I can only handle so much stress and I would rather do without extra's than keep having the stress filled lifestyle that I have had and with the added stress of this new job will bring me....Thanks all for listening to me.
I have until the 27th of this month to decide if I will take the placement they are offering me. I just pray that I can file for UI or if not I will need to quite right out....Please pray for me

Can you possibly do a job share? My district used to allow that. I don't really know but when my sister was caring for our elderly grandparents she got a small $ subsidy from social security, I think. That might apply in your situation?
I just applied for a job with the local police department however; I don't think I will get it even thou I'm perfect for it with my background. Most jobs in California these days you need to be bilingual in Spanish.
Mysteryinc, I know that we would make it if I quite my job or not take the job placement they are offering me. I just fear that EDD (unemployment) will reject my filing because our School District offered me a job. It states "it has to be good cause", I can't make it on time for my new job....I didn't have that problem with my present job? We're on Furlough this week (my husband also works for the same School District) I will let HR know when I return that I can't take the job they are offering me and that I will take the lay off....
I took a 40k cut in pay when this first a cured with me. I had to work from home and in order to do that I needed to find a new job which was my cut in pay. I've been on the edge of losing this job for months, but somehow I'm squeaking by. Our savings is gone due to lawyer fees as well. Would I do it again...In a heartbeat!
