Mom is going away for 12 years for drugs She will be going in on the 22 of June. We have had temporary custody for the last 3 years while she was out doing her drug thing. In and out of rehab and jail. But we always had the in sight that one day she might get it togther and be good to go with the girls. Well now we have to face the fact that the oldest one will be 18 when she gets out and the yougest one will be 16. My questions is should we really push for permanent custody right now everything is fine. Both dads are out of the picture and never really have been in the picture most of thier lifes. Not sure what the difference really is
Thank you
Thank you

I had temporary custody but went back to court to make it permanent right away because teen GD was nervous about temporary. But the court clerk and the judge told me I didn't need to do it. I'm in MN so not sure if that helps. (((HUGS))) from one grand doing the hard work to another.

Thank you all information helps. We dont want to return to court if it is not really a big deal we have had both for over 3 years now. Just with mom going away for so long it was something that came up as something we might need to do now. Hugs and prayers

In Ohio, temporary custody last for two years, then a permanent home must be found or the child goes into foster care.

I would adopt.

We have had them for 3 years and the State of Indinana has no limit on the amount of years it can be temporary. We can't adopt as much as we would love to because mom and one of the dads will not agree to it. Not sure what will happen the mom has now decided that she no longer wants the girls to stay with us due to the fact that we are not letting her have as much involvedment as she wants. She has been high and very upsetting to the girls when we do let her come around. And she has had little to nothing to do with them for the past year but right now new boyfriend is locked up so she is board and wants to play mommy and we are not letting her. She came over for an hour on fathers day and we had to stay up all night with two little girls because she told them that they where going to move in with her as soon as she got out of persion and that they would not be seeing us again.

It doesn't matter that she won't agree to the adoption. It's in thier best interest. give it a try. If you're providing a good home she doesn't get to say where the children should be. Document and stick to "the best interest of the child' . You'll be supprised. Courts want stability for kids, and the fact that she's going to jail might be a good thing for you.

I always thought that both parents had to agree to have them be adopted. I dont know why I thought that but I did. Yesturday it got pretty bad between us and her. She wants to play mom but does not have the ablility to. Sometimes I think that she lives in a different world. I will have to talk to our lawyer and see if we can give it a try. Thank you for the information

We have just started adoption proceedings in Ohio. Our lawyer informs us that if the parent(s) haven't paid child support in over a year that we do not need their consent to adopt. We have had my GD for almost 4 years and have not been paid any child support.

wow that is good to know One dad has been ordered to pay but never has and the other one has a court order that he is not to have any contact with the cjild. We have had them both for over 3 years and have never gotten a dime from any of them. We are setting up a meeting with our lawyer next week to see what we need to do.
