This community is dedicated to grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. In cases where the parents are not willing or able to provide adequate care for their children, grandparents may take on the role of primary caregivers. I have met with my attorney twice about adopting my granddaughters (ages 7 & 9) who have lived with me for 4 years. Bio mom (my daughter) in prison. Bio fathers both got of prison in 2011 and youngest gd bio dad taking me to court for custody/visitation. Court hearing next week, my atty. is going to try to get bio to sign paperwork to give up his parental rights in lieu of child support. Otherwise, we will seek child support.
I told daughter I was seeking adoption and she is ready for the fight. Her only concern was a court hearing may jeopardize her chances of early release from prison and she said she will "seriously consider" signing adoption papers if I wait until November, which is when she would receive early release from prison. As always, she is thinking of herself first. Girls want to live with me. I explained to attorney I want to give girls security, stability and should I die (I have stage 4 cancer so chances of living more than 5 years is slim) I want to say who girls will live with. Attorney says even with adoption bios have first chance of custody should I die. He thinks adoption won't help which I don't understand. Anyway, going to try to adopt.
Anyone in Ohio gone through adoption proceeding where bio's contest adoption? I am real interested in hearing other's stories..

I would check with a different attorney. That doesn't sound right. We just adopted. I'm told they are our children. We are going to have them baptized and in our will add the God mother as care taker if anything should happen to the both of us before they turn of age. You should also talk with your GC as to who they would like to be raised by if you cannot be here. Looking at their ages, the courts will give them a say.
