Our youngest grandson (age 8) has been struggling with spelling to the point where the teacher is giving him less math homework so he can concentrate on passing a test. Even then he can barely master the concept.
I went online and Googled "child is bad at spelling" and up came a site on dyslexia. OMG, when I saw the list of signs I couldn't believe it. Bad handwriting, couldn't tie his shoes until just this year, reverses letters, says "w" for "r" -- is good at math and other motor skills -- just about every symptom came up!!!
His teacher said she thought he could have ADHD. But his scout troop leader is a special ed teacher with a child with ADHD. She said "no way," that he was no more or less fidgety than the other boys. He claims he fidgets because he can't keep up with the schoolwork.
So we're having him tested for a learning disability. Apparently the school can't test specifically for dyslexia, but they can probably tell us if they think it's that. I hope that's all it is, because it's so fixable.
The worst part is that the poor little thing is doing two to four hours of homework every night just to tread water in class! And of course he'll have to go to summer school.
He's the one Pinky did the most drugs with while she was pregnant, too - including crystal meth. And he's such a sweetie pie. He's trying SO hard and it's frustrating because he seems very, very smart in every other way.
Of course he could just be a bad speller, like many people are. It never ends, does it?

The teacher did cut back on his math homework because he's doing very well in that, so maybe I can squeeze in some phonics and see if it helps.
