This community is dedicated to grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. In cases where the parents are not willing or able to provide adequate care for their children, grandparents may take on the role of primary caregivers. YAY! Thank God it went SO smoothly. The judge was a doll - he spoke almost entirely to the three kids and made them feel special. Even better, we were the first this morning to have our hearing.
I discovered something interesting, though. We were asked if the kids had any American Indian blood, which they don't. I asked our lawyer and she said that you can't adopt a child with American Indian blood unless you get approval from the tribe.

Wo when the judge came over to shake the kids' hands I asked him to explain to them that it was all legal language, and that they could still have a relationship with their mother if they want?" He was SO kind and explained that the language is necessary for legal reasons only, and that it didn't prohibit them from having a relationship with their mother.
Then when we got home I gave each child his and her original birth certificate. They seemed so happy to have it because it will always be the "real" one to them.
