OT - Does anyone Use coupons to save?

My 12 yr old daughter has been watching that new show Extreme Couponing, and we started working by organizing coupons in a binder and checking local stores on sales. I also check couponer's websites that do the work by letting you know how to save even more with what stores & how you can get them sometimes for zero $.

I use to use coupons more when I was staying home with my children but got away from it when I went back to work because it is so time consuming. It is still time consuming however; with these websites that post all the deals & link the coupon has me interested again.

I know that I wouldn't be able to extreme coupon however; I have gotten better at buying things we need for allot cheaper than I did before. My daughter and I try to spend a little time a night learning the new ways.

Now, that I know I will be taking off for a month from work to help grandson with treatments needed for his delayed development I will need to save better because I won't be paid when I am off.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been successful using coupons lately with all the new ways their doing it?

I've tried it, but found it to be too much work. Since I work at home, I always have to weigh hours that I could be pursuing new business vs. hours spent saving money.

Now that coupons are online I may try it again, but I'm sure I'll never be as committed as some people -- I know there are those who practically get their groceries free!

On the other hand, I have tried mystery shopping and was making about $200/month -- doing that half-heartedly. I don't know how much I could've made if I really took it seriously!

That is how it seems to work for me, too. However; now that there are several sites, blogs, etc that I look at I can see something I may need and either print it or it tells me it is in the RedPlum coupon section of our sunday paper.

I know that even thou I will be home for a month I have that month filled with my gs's therapy appointments but now that I have gotten the sites and have my daughter file coupons in binder from the sunday paper or online coupons it much easier to get what we need at a discount or free. If you or anyone else is interested in the links I can send them to you if you email me. I found the one I like and pretty much stick to that one site, she does a daily list and I just check it and if there is a link for a coupon I go from there.

I love a good coupon! I wouldn't go so far as the extreme shows.....what are you going to do with 15 packs of gum or whatever. I do use them but only for stuff I plan to buy anyway...it is fun to see how much you can save. If I save enough over a course of a month I might treat myself to a starbucks or something...what can I say? I'm easily entertained!

I'm not sure if I can add a link, but I do get free stuff like samples of toothpaste, dryer sheets, full bottle of Country Bob's twice, and lots of other things. Just go to your search like Google, etc and type in freebies or similar wording. Also there is groupon that will have a lot of deals in your area and notify you each day of the good ones, like a free meal, discount on things, etc. I'm also signed up to another site that I can print coupons from, get paid for reading an email without buying anything, which adds up. Got a check twice for $50 each in the last yr. We're on a pension, so every little bit helps.

If you have a printer or access to one my girlfriend loves this link.. they always have lots of free stuff and alot of coupons. I shop at Pathmark and they are associated with zavers.com they have coupons on there that link up with your store card so there is no cutting or printing. I love to save on anyting free or bogo are 2 of my fav words.

I went shopping and got 250. in stuff for 85.00 with my sunday coupons and the zavers link.

Just gives me a reason to go spend money on something else I need want or desire. I worked for the savings so I get to spend or save it.

I did it many years ago when my children were small, but the two stores that doubled coupons here had to stop because of Wisconsin state laws. If you had a coupon for 75 cents off a box of cereal, you bought the smallest box and got it free because it cost less than the coupon was worth when it was doubled. There more 'rebates' back then - $5.00 off on meat if you sent in 25 cereal boxtops, etc. So you saved every proof of purchase and receipt, organized them so you knew where they were, and you had them all ready to send in for the 'rebate'. Not only was the cereal free but you also received $5.00 off on meat later. My best shopping trip, probably about 34 years ago, was $100 worth of groceries for $18, then I probably got some rebates from those items. We don't use coupons much now because we don't buy processed foods anymore - times have changed for us.
