amazing that so many gp of every culture and regardless of financial income - are just stepping up for what ever the reason may be.

very interesting but what about those of us who have given up the grandparent years to raise our grandchildren? Where are the stories about us? Only a small portion of grandparents "assist" in the care of their grandchildren. Most of us are in it for the long haul, including college. 80% receive no assistance from feeral or state government because we work, our retirement incomes are too high, or we own a home. What was meant to be our retirement becomes the funding to raise our second family. Isn't that a story to be told?

Daisy- I totally agree. I actually sent an email to the author of the article and posed your exact question to her. I let her know that we had much to say and we only needed her to be our voice. Let's see if I get anything back

There are many quotes in the article about us grandparents stepping up because we were "financially secure" and "retiring early", etc. What a joke!

I live on poverty income, am a single grandparent, and have to work to support us both, as do many if not most of the grandparents I know! (IF I could manage to find a job). I have three at least strikes against me! 1) AGE AGE AGE 2) raising a toddler (People don't like to hire women with toddlers or young children - too much missed work due to illness - this is a proven statistic) 3) I have been sole supporter of my own 3 children, so took whatever jobs I could over the last 7 years so we didn't starve, places closed where I worked (2) and I've had to completely reclimb the employment ladder in my late 40's. Do you know what that looks like on a resume??? All they see is that I changed jobs 4 times in the last 7 years. They don't even look at why. *sigh*

I'm having trouble in this economy, despite all of my skills and knowledge and experience, finding even part-time employment. No health insurance. Don't know how or when I'll ever be able to have that again! My income is like 200 a month over the limit to receive it in our state. lol. That's with unemployment. Once unemployment is done, I"ll qualify easily! :) IF there's any money left by then.... people do get turned down around here due to lack of funds.

*sigh* Where is all of this in that article??? Sorry - to me it just patronizes the horrible struggle we have and candy-coats it. It's pure propoganda IMO.
