We are all right there with you!
I'm a "step" grandparent, too, so I'm kind of like your husband in that I can separate my emotions from Pinky, his daughter and the "mother" of our three grandchildren. Pinky is a druggie as well, and after a period of about nine months clean and sober we think she's back on the pills again.
It does seem to be a horrific situation when you have to choose your grandchildren over your own children. But when you look at it logically, WE didn't choose one person over another --THEY chose THEMSELVES over everybody else. THEY are the ones who made the decision that "feeling good right this minute" was more important than family, health, friends and children.
Had they not done so, they would be raising their own children and we would be spoiling them rotten on weekends, then happily handing them back. I think -- no, I know -- that you are doing absolutely the right thing by refusing to pay for your daughter's responsibilities.
Stick around --this is a great place to ask questions and just whine sometimes :-)
I completely sympathize with you about your dd, it's an awful feeling to realize that your own daughter is unable and unwilling to get her act together for the sake of her children. I've been hearing the promises for two years now, yet dd still has to meet at least one condition of the five the judge set for her to regain custody. I've had to realize that beating myself up for her actions is not getting me anywhere. Change has to come from within her.
And, echoing everyone else, it was the bio's choice to act the way they do, we just deal with the fallout. And like khinson1 said "What idiots they are."
My 5 YO GD also has PTSD and an anxiety disorder due to the chaos, abuse and neglect she endured during the first 4 years of her life with her mom ( my daughter) and bio dad (DD ex husband). My Gd came to us in December of 2010 and I convinced both bios to sign over custody in December 2011.
My husband is also fed up with my daughter, understandably so. She continues to not take her medications (she is bipolar 2), has the worst taste in men and generally has never put either of her kids first in anything. She also just moved back near us after being over an hour away for a few months. He is quite willing to say whatever he feels to her and while I know that feeling she is still my daughter and I feel the pain you do.
Our stories are way too much alike. I have worked in various roles in the mental health and developmental disabilities field for over 24 years now. My daughter was 15 when my husband and I met, shall I go on?
I hate feeling like I have to protect my GD from the one person in all the world who should have her best interests at heart but what else can I do? This sweet child did not ask to be born to such an ill selfish mom and in no way deserves to live the rest of her life like she had to the first 4 years. I know my daughter NEVER learned any of these destructive behaviors from me so i have decided that most of it is genetic just like her illness. Her sperm donor was much the same when she was growing up.
Please feel free to share here or message me. It seems like we have much in common.
This was my last straw!!!
Since their is no visitation for the gs she doesn't see him and she sees the gd rarely and at a public place. I will not take her for visits, my husband does. I feel for him but he is where your at. He is tired of her making poor choices and distanced himself for the sake of the children. And we all feel robbed of our freedom. My bio children are on their own not married but living their own lives. I feel sometimes that I'm robbed from sharing in their lives because I have little children to take care of and can't just take off for trips with my daughter. I went through periods of anger and resentment with my husband as well as my stepdaughter. The anger has been easier to take lately. I don't think any of us on this board planned this for our lives, but it helps reading that other people are going thru almost the same things as you. Hang in there.
