On Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
It was informative but this is the information I should have received when I first went for guardianship. This was discussed that this information needs to get out to grandparents in the day or two they have to make this discission. The time DCF iscthere to take the kids and you have to think fast what is the best way to go? Be a foster grandparent, guardianship or adoption. Sometimes you have time to research it other times you are forced to act fast.
Services available were talked about and how you lose so many of those services if you do not keep the children under the control of DCF. There was discussion on what needs to change.

At least there is movement which was not available when we took in grandson. Illinois is starting new program in July that will keep grandchildren with grandparents and use resources to help grandparents and grandchildren to succeed. Thx for sharing info.

There was no mention of trying to keep children with grandparents. That I was very disappointed in..

Can you elaborate on that program more, Daisy????

In AZ we have an all volunteer organization that lobbies the legislators, makes presentations to Child Protective Services, and does their best to raise awareness about grand-families in our communities. Do you have a group where you live that can follow up with the counsel? Accountability and keeping the issues in the public's eye seems to be the only way to make change.

This counsel is the group that pushes things through for grandparents. They keep in touch with support groups, DCF, probate, juvenile court, family lawyers, they have monthly meeting, they are available to help in any way they can. WE just have to get in touch with them if we need help or have suggestions on how to improve how the Commonwealth of Massachusetts deals with grandparents and grandchildren.

Sounds like your state is ahead of ours. That is great that you have someone who knows what to do and who to talk to. We struggle with that sometimes.
