Been through this. There are protections you can put on her computer through your service provider. It will limit her ability to search so you might need to take stops off while she does research. The problem is that the wrong sites grab onto partial words like Miley and that's how they get in. If the kids put in exact words and search only exact, that will keep them out. You can also set your computer security up in the tools menu to keep sexually explicit sites out. We did that w/gs when he began to get curious. I set a password so he could not get on computer w/out my knowing it. Also, if you are networking, I believe you can set up an alarm to ring at your computer that lets you know kids are going on the wrong websites. btw, the American Library Association has fought to keep their computers open and I can tell you I have gone into library and found young boys on sites like women wrestlers in very scanty attire, to say the least. I asked the librarian if they were not policing the computers and she told they cannot because they have a right and that if parents want to watch what sites their kids are getting onto they can. So mom thought she was doing a good thing leaving kids at library to study. Right. Check out the American Library Association on their statements regarding this.

I've had a major problem with the libraries because of that. Fortunately my township feels the same as we do and they have all sorts of restrictions on them.

I was wondering if there was some sort of alarm -- I'll have to look it up. We had her browser at the highest level of security, but it didn't block anything much.

We'll be looking into software programs and other solutions. It's so evil, isn't it? I mean if you're an adult and want to look at that crap it's one thing. But to trick little kids into viewing it -- I hope there's a special place in hell for them. Preferably, some awful thing that will happen to them here, as well.

That's why I set the password system up. I could go in and get on whatever I needed to. He never could figure out my password: "Kevin, don't do that!". I'm wondering about her ability to get in even with highest security....could she know how to reset security level herself?

Just FYI - I had both password system and browser security set to highest, but my son has an extremely hi IQ and easily figured out how to get around them both by the time he was 14. lol.

I was actually denegrated to having to take a piece of the computer hookup with me every time I left the house - a different one every time so he couldn't get a spare...lol. Sad state of affairs. I felt humiliated that I had to stoop that low. It's hard when your kids are more savvy than you! ;)

I hear ya! We finally started working with gs and reviewed websites visited. He was rather embarrassed! I didn't criticize him, just asked him why he went to one site or the other and when I found bad ones set the limits. If I found he had been on even one wrong website, he w/lose all computer time. Had to follow up a few times and never gained total control but he knew I was aware and I think that stopped him a little too. Never thought I'd be in this position!

There are actually pieces of software to track and limit what our children can access one of them being "Net Nanny", I know because we've been researching them prior to hooking up Missy's computer to the net.

We haven't bought anything yet but there are several available.

Thanks, Ladyrltr for the "Net Nanny" suggestion. I've just started looking into them, too -- some of them seem amazing! Spectorsoft seems to make a good product, at least going by reviews.
