GS may be having hearing problems

I took my oldest gs to the dr yesterday for recheck on behavior problems and after we talked he began the physical part of the exam and he was talking real low to gs who didn't repond until he raised his voice and turned his face toward him.The dr asked me if I thought he was having hearing problems.I told him that we always had talked loud to him to get him to respond but thought it was because of his Autism.He has had 2 hearing tests the 1st one was inconclusive and the second done in the office he couldn't do.The dr explained that he thinks he maybe hearing some but it is more like he is underwater and the sounds are distorted to him.He also said that that could be the reason for alot of his behavior and his speech problems.Now we are headed to a speech and hearing specialist to find out for certain what is going on with him. DR P. said he thinks gs might need hearing aids and in the nearly 25 years I have taken my children and grandchildren to him he has never once been wrong about a diagnosis with them. Dr P also said we may start seeing more of the effects of his exposure to drugs befor birth now that he is getting older.But we will have to cross each bridge as we come to it and right now its the speech and hearing that we have to deal with.I am just wondering if any one else has a child with hearing problem and had to have hearing aides how they delt with it.

I have read in the news of cases where a child is diagnosed with this or that behavioral problem, when in fact they can't hear/see very well.

Our school gives hearing tests, but I don't think they're as comprehensive as the kid a doctor would give. I'm surprised that doctors don't test more extensively for hearing, since a child doesn't know any different.

My gs's stepmother refused to give him antibiotics for frequent ear and sinus infections which caused a tumor to grow and destroy majority of his conductive hearing bones in his left ear. He has had 8 surgeries and will always have problems. School districts were limited on their understanding of unilateral hearing loss and constantly criticized his behavior because he spoke loudly and didn't always hear teacher. Even with a hearing aid, he receives muffled words and noise distracts his ability to know where sound is coming from. It's really been difficult. The aid they receive is based on the severity of the hearing loss. The hearing aides are only part of the process. My gs learned lip reading and was taught to turn his good ear to the sound after he locates where the sound is coming from. Technology has improved greatly though and your gs may fair better. Good luck. Let me know what doc says after testing.

If he does have Autism (not sure if the hearing problem could mimic Autism, you your gs) and he is given hearing aids he may have more reactions to the sounds around him. We found with our youngest that the drugs that took away the anxiety made other problems when it came to dealing with the effects of Autism.

mamaw I do My son not my gd has severe to profound hearing loss!we tried the hearing aids,didnt work,he had an coclear implant in his left ear we went to alot of testing and alot of therapy,he didnt want to wear it,he didnt want to hear!I got together with his teacher's and his therapists and told them this is not working!so we started lip reading and sign language my son ended up going to a school in Saint Augustine for the blind and the deaf,he loved it there everyone around him was signing!he has graduated but is still attending there for some more classes and studying to be a Chef;but listen there are other success stories of hearing aids working and also that implant working for other kids,its just justin's hearing loss is so severe that none of those things worked for him,and the fact that he didnt wont to hear he said Im happy not hearing;how can u argue with that?but there is a flip side to the choice I allowed him,he reads on a third to fourth grade level which means he couldnd take the f-cat therefore he realy didnt graduate!his diploma was fake u know what I mean?Thats the part that stinks,
