First day of school

Wasn't sure they would make it since they have been fighting a stomach virus, but they didn't want to miss the first day. 6th grader came home and said it was the worst day ever! We knew her best friend had moved away, but another friend was hanging out with some different girls and ignored Z. She has had trouble making friends in the past. She is tall and very developed for an 11 yr old. She is ADD, struggles in school and always the stigma of living with gramma and where are your parents questions from kids. I am just feeling so bad for her.

I worry about some of those same issues with my gs, who is starting Kindergarten. He wont know anyone in his class. The only child we know who is going there will be in a different class. I wish there was a magic wand so we could let others see how wonderful our grandchildren are.

Kids can be so cruel. We went to principal when boys taunted our grandson cruelly on bus. Did nothing. We started driving him to school to avoid more problems. We had a talk about handling situations like that but why make life harder than it already was?

School starts here on the 27th. Last year I had not heard of any comments about the girls living with me but I did have one crying about teasing on the school bus. One email to the school and that was solved. I dealt with the big sister and the school dealt with her friend no more picking on the little sister on the bus.

A whole week until the kids go to school and they are off the wall. We are trying really hard to keep them busy and wear them out so they sleep. The oldest has moved to the livingroom at night, she finally falls asleep after hugs and back rubs. The youngest sleeps with the dog.

I guess I should count my blessings! Gd is in 1st grade here this year. She has a few of her classmates from last year plus some new ones. (Here they split the grade level into separate classes but do certain things all together so they get to do things with the WHOLE grade level.)

We have a fair number of students who are living with their grandparents here. There are like 4 or 5 in gd class alone that do. Since I work at the school, the kids all know that I am her grandmother,etc. I don't know that it has ever been a big issue for her since I have also let her teacher know up front what the situation was.

GD is pretty good at being flexible and versatile when it comes to dealing with a group of people. She can usually go with the flow for the most part after the first hour/day. We started school here on Aug. 14. So far so good but the year is still young also!
