Okay; I just visited that link. It's got great information and the Wikipedia link for FAS is a good one, too. Lots of good info here. Anyone who has grands who have been exposed in utero to any sort of substance abuse would be wise to learn anything and everything we can in order to be the best advocates we can be for our GKs.

Thx gma for sharing that doctor's name again. I was at a meeting the other day for grans and they pointed out that how drugs/alcohol affect the children is different in every case and the importance of working with your professional for proper treatment and diagnosis of the child.

I just went to an in-service training and I was sad that they didn't give info regarding service and needs for these type of children.

I have been reading the book "Mystery of Risk" and that is full of info and I just started reading it. I spoke with a Dr at the workshop and he agree that I should seek services (OT).

Dr. Ira Chasnoff wrote that book and I had the pleasure of listening to him for 3 hours at the DCFS conference in Chicago. I wish I could go to a weekly group with this man leading. He is so incredibly knowledgable on the subject. I've started the book, too, but haven't disciplined myself to really delve into it deeply enough yet. I hope that more and more doctors become educated on this sad subject so that more children can be treated effectively and receive the kind of therapy they need and deserve.

Thanks GMaWilli..I couldn't remember who posted his book. I ordered it because there is a good chase that my gs was exposed to several toxic items.

My gs is only 6mths old however; I feel the sooner I do some OT or the DPPT that Dr Chasnoff speaks of the better. His treatments are what I would like to do in hopes of helping my gs with any senory issues.

You are very welcome. I'm happy you are getting some useful information and I think it is key to get the earliest intervention possible. Waiting for years and leaving issues unchecked and unresolved is what really causes the most serious problems with these kiddos. I think problems really start coming out hard core around the age of 2-3rd grades according to Dr. Chasnoff. Early intervention is definitley the key.

I work at an Elementary school and I see many Kindergradeners who have issues that were egnored. We had cute little guy last year who had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome it was so sad. He never had any treatment until he came to our school. When his mom would be late to pick him up we in the front office would have to watch him and I had stand right with him because he was all over and would never listen to the rules. It just brought my heart. They took the face photo of my grandson however; I don't think that he has that.

I just got a copy of the court records from my son the bio father. It stated that the hospital he was born did do any drug testing. I thought they always do drug testing..they did do a report to cps but I don't know what that was.

I just finished reading a great book called "Damaged Angels" by Bonnie Buxton and would recommend it to anyone who is raising a FASD child/grandchild. The author herself adopted 2 FASD girls and shares the heartbreak/joys of raising those girls. It references several studies and articles and gives a list of articles and support information in the back.

Ladyrltr, that also sounds like a book I would like to read. When I went to the in-service training put together by DCFS I wrote on my eval comment card that it would be great if they could have a Dr speak on children exposed to drugs in the womb. I hope that they find someone because they had this Dr speak about discipline and it is different dealing with FAS children.
