I recently got temporary custody , at least 1 yr . of my g-son but the parents are not and will not cooperate in giving me his birth certificate and soc sec card so I can get things started. Everyone from soc services to the ymca needs these things. So does any one know what , where, who I can go to please?

As far as I know, as long as you have custody papers you can apply for these documents yourself.

You'd have to go to your local Social Security office for the card (unless you already have the number. In most cases, that's all that's needed.)

Contact your bureau of vital statistics and ask them. Each state may be different. Social Services should be able to help you also. They can't help you get it but s/be able to tell you where you can go to get them. I'm assuming gc was born in the state you reside in?

I agree with Sara and Daisy. Also, is there a way that you can take your papers back to the court house and ask about having them (the bios) mandated to give you this information? You may be able to ask the court house if they have the ssn and if they do, you can take it from there.

If the bios are anything like Pinky, those documents have been long lost. I had to get every document directly from the source, because Pinky didn't have anything.

There could be court costs and it's probably true that they have no longer have the records. You just have to prove you are the guardian and you s/be able to get them from public records.

I just went through this. I live in Texas, and every state is different so you might check first, but I had to have the Birth Certificate before I could get the Social Security Card. After waiting in line for 2 hours at Social Security Office, they sent me back to the courthouse because the custody papers that I had made several copies of ( everyone wants to see them) did not have the official state seal stamped on it. You will only get one copy with the seal. Doctor, Dentist, Day Care, school and counselor only wanted copies. It was only the Social Security Office that I had that problem with.

I have not been getting reply notices so was just checking. Thank you all so much for caring and replying. I have his number but no card so hopefully that will be enough to get a new card and B certificate and get things rolling. Also, i really need others to talk to bout raising teenage boys. and maybe I can help you in some way so don't hesitate to hollar anytime.

We've never had to produce the actual Social Security card for our grandchildren. The number is all we've ever needed. The custody papers are another story - as Yaya said, almost everyone accepts a photocopy. Since you can order most birth certificates by mail, a photocopy should be OK. But if you're close enough to the agency that creates them, you probably should take the sealed copy, just to be sure.
