We went to court yesterday to determine the custody of my 22 month old GD. She has been in foster care since April. I did not take her then mainly because of the mis-information given me by the social worker who was called to scene of my daughter's arrest. Of course, I already have custody of her sister and my other daughter's two teenagers. My boyfriend of 8 years who has always been a big help is in the end stage of throat cancer with hospice services. Anyhow I did not get the baby, the guardian ad litem thought I had too much on my plate already. You don't say. I am relieved and mad at the same time. I don't know if I could have handled the other child, but I would have tried. The aunt and uncle who got custody will provide a wonderful home but it still hurts. I love her so much.
I do have shared legal custody and very good visitation. The couple have primary physical custody. I will have her 6 to 8 days a month and a month in the summer and some holidays. I'm going to make these times special for all the kids.
My 6 year old granddaughter has been displaying some behaviors at school and home that have gotten worse. After having her tested again, lots of tests done 3 years ago, She was found to have a normal IQ but has ADHD and anxiety disorder and Reactive attachment disorder. Now she is in counseling and on medication. Three years ago a different doctor had her scoring a low IQ and suggested mental retardation. I knew better than that, I am a special ed teacher. I agree with the latest evaluation. She had a rough start with a mother who abused drugs and changed boyfriends all the time. Her father was never there. I am lucky that the teenage girls are good kids. Why their mother threw them out I'll never understand.
My daughter who was arrested for drug charges went to court today. She will serve a little over 2 years but it will be in a therapeutic community where she will get help for her problems and maybe this will help her. At least she and the girls are safe now. This may make no sense but it has helped me to write it down and to make sense of all that has happened in the past few days.
