Grandparents Raising Children Support Group
This community is dedicated to grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. In cases where the parents are not willing or able to provide adequate care for their children, grandparents may take on the role of primary caregivers. We got a few minutes late to the time that was assigned due to a shooting on the highway we were on. However; the hearing didn't start for an hour & half later. I was able to go to the Grandparents as Parents office and go over several questions and they sat with us until the hearing started. We talked about my husband's concerns with raising my GS at our age and she helped talk about those fears and he was back on track with going forward with adoption.
They went with the recommendations of the SW except to change the foster service County. The judge was going to approve that we go through our county until I let them know that my GS was enrolled in the Program @ UCLA for children who have been exposed to drugs & alcohol and he has to be a LA county foster child to be in the program.
My son did state his wishes were that my GS be adopted by his parents. The judge turned to my son and said "Do you know how lucky you are that your parents stepped in to care for your son"? He said "yes maim I do appreciate them". The Judge also said "The State and this court appreciate grandparents like you."
They set the next hearing for Aug 6th which will be full removal of parental rights if I understood it right. The Caseworker for the grandparents group said we should be contacted by the adoption foster worker soon.
The baby's lawyer also added that my GS is in the process of being accessed by the Regional Ctr for developmental and medical issues. So it was noted in the court records. I was just overwhelmed by all the support we got.
I am so grateful to all here and all the other support systems I was blessed to come across since I took in my 2.5 mth old GS last June.

It was a female Judge of course...LOL
I have heard many stories how Grandparents don't get the respect that they deserve and the focus is on the Bio's...
I can't wait until we get contacted by the adoption SW we have many questions. My husband is still worried about if something happens to us and who will raise our grandson. My oldest daughter will be starting a family soon and they have moved to the east coast far from us and I am not sure if they would take him.
I was also told by the Grandparent as Parent's caseworker that I should take these specialized classes in case they find any developmental issues with my grandson. I just got a flyer from the Kinship Org. listing these classes I will sign up. I just hope that I get the childcare funds because here again...when I take off I don't get paid and I still have to have GS in daycare when I take off for these. In fact, even if I take off 1 or 2 days with GS I still have to pay the full weekly rate.
