I stumbled upon this site last night, and got totally lost, reading about what it's like to have autism. If your grandson can't articulate what he wants to say to his bio, it could literally be painful for him!
This site is SO revealing I think everyone should read some of these articles. An incredible eye-opener for sure.

Or maybe singing songs together---or she could just sing for him. I know when I talk to my almost 2 yo on the phone she just says "hi" over and over again lol. I sing silly songs like itsy bitsy spider and other ones and if I stop because she gets quiet and I think she's gone away, she pipes up "again!"
Or maybe Skype? That way he could show her his toys, drawings/scribbles, etc and she could ooh and aah over them.
Gd has gotten to the point with age that either she will or won't talk to her bio mom.We just don't force it any more. If she talks to her fine, and if she doesn't that is fine also. Mom gets upset when gd doesn't talk to her, but she doesn't come see this kid when she has the chance to visit her. We remind her that she hasn't seen or talked to her daughter in ages, so what does she expect from the child???
I know when bio mom calls a lot close to gather, we seem to have more fall out then when mom doesn't call. Of course, when mom doesn't call her for a period of time, then she wants to know "why mom isn't calling?"
I am to the point the less contact, the better between bio mom and gd. Bio mom has had her chance and she continually passes on the chance to have contact with her. Bio mom has mentioned moving to the east coast which would just make my day.....so it probably won't happen!
I can't imagine her realistically expecting a child with autism to hold a conversation on the phone at his current age. I am with the other poster, if she is off her meds then no contact or calls until she gets her act back together.
Hope things improve for all you ! It sucks any time of the year but especially during the holidays.
Scgramma we do just put the phone on speaker and when he was younger we would just play because it was the only way I could be sure he would make a sound.
Monkey our contact is actually court ordered skype. It's only ever happened twice in nearly two years. Skype didn't go much better than the phone calls, she just sat there and didn't say much. After about 2 minutes of uncomfortableness he left and went play. The story is a great idea. I typed out a couple of his favorite stories and put them in her Xmas package.
Kslady I am pretty sure my gs thought phones were actually called mom for sometime. I am very worried about what happens when he is older. How he will process it. She really has zero understanding about autism. I think she googled it once, and only seemed to find a bunch of misinformation
