I totally get it though - my metabolism is ALOT different in my 40s than even a few years ago.
ICK.
Cut out sugar, processed foods and diet pop. Eat lots of veggies.
Winter is harder - I like to run when I'm in the mood, but it's too cold and icy. So I tend to use the elliptical or stationary bike in this weather.
I hear ya on the getting older, harder to lose weight merry go round. I'm 56 and I find it hard to lose weight and I want to lose that 10 pounds too. I have a personal trainer so I'll share something that might help. ( Oh, I agree with FF, that if you don't currently do any strength training, it will help if you incorporate some of that because you will burn more calories with increased muscle mass ). The elliptical and stationary bike are great. ( I run from elliptical machines like the plague.. lol ). What surprised me was that Nick (my trainer) told me that weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise. I was surprised at that. My biggest issue that drives him crazy is I don't eat enough. I definitely have some ' issues' and for many many years I maintained my weight ( albeit too low ) by not eating much. After doing that for 20 some years, when I hit my 40's that didn't work anymore for sure. I still struggle with not eating enough, so I don't lose weight because my body stays in that 'starvation ' mode and hangs on to my fat for dear life. No matter how much I exercise. I'm trying really hard to change that. Nick wants me to eat 1,600 calories a day and he wants me to eat every 3-4 hours to keep my metabolism up. I'm sure a lot of y'all have heard that. He definitely doesn't like processed anything. He tells me to only grocery shop on the outside isles of the store. All he way around. Produce/meats/dairy..
He likes me to mix protein/carbs together.
One snack he loves is to get a whole wheat soft tortilla shell.. spread a thin layer of peanut butter and add a banana and cut it in half. Eat that for a healthy snack. He loves greek yogurt ofcourse with fresh blueberries ( not a fan ). Oatmeal with berries in the morning within 30 minutes of getting up.
I just need to mind him more!
I've tried just about every diet and workout routine there is and the following is what worked better than anything else for me. Not saying this is this best way for everyone it just worked for me.
Cut out sugar, processed foods and diet pop. Eat lots of veggies. I forgot to add protein and fats and a limited amount of fruits. No bananas.
HIIT training. I used timed kettlebell swings working up to 45 seconds of work with 15 seconds of rest. I also did other exercises like cleans, presses and snatches but they weren't timed. You are a runner so instead of 4 or 5 mile runs you could do sprints.
Intermittent fasting. I did the 16/8 type (fast for 16 hours and eat during a 8 hour period) which was very easy for me. Simply put I skipped breakfast. At lunch I normally had a salad and then have super then snack on nuts, veggies, some kind of fruit like apples or pears, or have a protein shake with nuts, ground flaxseed and berries. My special treat just about every night was air popped pop corn with a couple tablespoons of melted butter and parmesan cheese.
The results of doing the above during a 4 month period was that I dropped 40 pounds and brought my body fat percentage down from 28% to 17%. Plus I felt great. Too bad my hip went out on me because after I got to where I couldn't workout anymore I fell off of my diet. I still ate decent for quite a while but became depressed from being in pain all the time and started eating my comfort food sugar.
Right after I had to stop working out I applied for some life insurance and had to do a physical. They did blood work and they checked around 20 different things. When I got the results back from the blood work I was right where I was suppose to be in every category. I ended up getting my policy for right at half of what my insurance broker thought that I would have to pay for someone at my age and with my history, recovering alcoholic.
Now that I can workout again I'm back on my diet and the intermittent fasting. I put on a little weight during the two years I wasn't able to work out that I want to get rid of but the main reason I'm doing the fasting is because from my research I believe it;s a healthy way to eat, I get lots to eat and I'm almost never hungry.

Or you could do Rick's diet of twinkies for breakfast, Ho Ho's for lunch and ding dongs for supper.
