I had a great day too, weather is wonderful for a change!!!!
In the upper levels, you see people riding with formal clothes and white gloves- lol. In reality, it's all about riding a horse in a very natural way, but there are various exercises that are judged by experts so that you can be compared to others when you're competing.
I used to hate the concept, but I'm starting to put 2 and 2 together, and I'm enjoying it now. There's a lot of detail work, but mastering a handful of details is really inspiring. I used to be all about the adrenalin rush of taking a jump. Then, I missed a jump during a show because the horse popped his shoulder out and wouldn't let me take a tight turn. If I'd have used a dressage method of creating a barrier with my outside rein, that wouldn't have happened.
Maybe it makes no sense, so look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT6Yn7SLkmQ
That's the upper levels- I can't do that. But I've ridden in 3 competitions and wore a blue blazer and tie- lol. The coolest thing is that you have to be completely subtle. If you go from a walk to a canter, no one should even be able to see the aids that your using......it should just "happen".
I was off on Friday and worked all day on the yard. spent about 4 hours tilling up a new flower bed and shoveling dirt. Saturday I was going to get the kayak out and do some sailing but I was just barely able to walk plus the 10 mph winds were closer to zero so I took the day off and smoked some ribs, played music and watched movies. Sunday we went to the nursery and spent the afternoon buying shrubs and flowers so I can do some more work.
With this type of riding, you can actually shift the weight in your hips, and the horse will turn. It's pretty cool!
