Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The classic picture is of excruciating and sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint. Low-grade fever may also be present.
gout symptoms are treated with prescription medications like colchicine or prednesone (or other steriods including cortisone injected directly into the afflicted joint ... which is lots of fun btw) as well as OTC and non-OTC NSAIDs.
once your past the current attack you will need to get your blood tested and determine if a course of treatment is needed.
If you just have the rare flare up triggered by dehydration combined with alcohol (esp beer) - then possibly you will be able to control w/o medication.
If not (your normal blood purine levels are high - i.e. when not drinking or eating high purine foods like organ meats and crustacions)...
Generally people are treated with daily alupurinal.
