Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The classic picture is of excruciating and sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint. Low-grade fever may also be present.

The tophes never go away but eventually your body encapsulates them, giving the affected joint(s) an unpleasant "knobby" look. Gout flares up when either new tophes form or the protective coating breaks down on old ones. There are medications in the pipeline to reduce or even dissolve these tophes but it will be a couple of years before the FDA completes studies on them.
