Goiter Support Group

A goitre (or goiter), also called a bronchocele, is a swelling in the neck (just below adam's apple or larynx) due to an enlarged thyroid gland. They are classified in different ways: A "diffuse goitre" is a goitre that has spread through all of the thyroid, a "Toxic goitre" refers to goitre deriving from inflammation, neoplasm, or malfunction of the thyroid, while "nontoxic goitre" refers to all other types.

    Goiter??

Hi everyone - I had my routine physical today and my doctor said my thyroid was enlarged. I currently take 50 mcg of Synthroid for hypothyroidism (T4 abnormal) and he thinks it may be a goiter and wants me to have an ultrasound done. Well, the remainder of the day, I've had this cough and it feels like something is around my neck. I'm not sure what the treatment is for a goiter and if it can...

    Alternative treatment/medicine for goiter

    1
I have told my doctor that I am considering surgery for removal of my goiter. But first, I was wondering if anyone has had any success in shrinking theirs with alternative treatment/medicine. I am not hyper or hypothyroid, my levels are normal and the biggest complaint I have is cosmetic. I do not like the way it looks. Here are my findings.Sonographic examination was performed of the soft...

My Tsh came back high (4.87) and the T3 was below normal but T4 was in range. For the past two years I had this strange problem with swallowing and tightening on the vocal cords and hoarseness. Especially after eating certain foods. And I think they were Goiter stimulating foods. I can't tell you how many times I've been to the ER! It's maddening!Right now I'm having trouble breathing, my...

This is what my GP said. When I was 11 years old my GP said that I had a goiter but it wasn't really anything to worry about. So I wasn't fussed. I'm currently seeing a rheumatologist (who is terrible, but that's another story). At my last appointment she said "we spoke about your goiter last appointment didn't we?". I said no, no one had mentioned it except when I was 11. She said "ok well talk...

    Total thyroidectomy for goitre... confused

    2
had a TT on thursday 14th April. I was extremely scared, in fact terrified. This was to remove a 5cm goitre that was blocking my windpipe and causing discomfort, all my bloods had been normal for years. It is now 48 hours after surgery and I have to say I have noticed some major differences in my wellbeing and I'm not sure if I am imagining it? I had been having palpitations for around 3 years...

Dont see my goiter so whats the deal?

    4
Ok, I'm 37 yr female who was recently dx with hyperthyroid and had an ultrasound that showed a slightly large one, which they consider a goiter. There is nothing visible on the outside and I can eat, breathe, swallow, etc w/o a problem. I'm getting a thyroid scan next week. I'm not nuts about having my thyroid out, RAI, or meds for the rest of my life. So, if the goiter isnt causing problems...

    Can voice be hurt permanently?

    1
My voice is fried today from shouting over band music and crowds at a show I attended yesterday. Toward the end of the event (a 4 hour battle of the bands) my voice was cracking pretty badly at high volume. Today my voice feels "tired". I don't know how else to put it. I have a voice, but it feels wrecked, and I feel the need to stay quiet. Also feel the need to clear my throat a lot. It got me...
