GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
I take nexium everyday and have since it came out. I take zantac at bedtime also because the nexium does not last over 12 hours for me. I don't know what meds you are taking, but one of my old docs had me only taking zantac all the time and prilosec for the really bad times. He would not give me anything strong enough to control the acid all the time. Yes, you will end up with bad effects from the acid if you don't control it. I have barretts and you don't want it since it is a precursor to cancer and has to be watched closely. I had to find a doc who believed the same as I did that it was best to control the acid no matter what.
good luck!
I have been reading about black raspberries for Barretts.
Ohio State University did a huge study on the benefits. Is anyone else familiar with that?
Take gaviscon when you have breakthrough acid and really watch what you eat, only drink water.
Take something to reduce acids right before you eat, that seems to help also.
Sometimes the meds you are on quit working and need to get your prescription changed. Have you had an endoscopy lately?
BTW, my GERD is bad enough that I take generic omeprazole, 40 mg 2x daily, which helps tremendously as long as I don't miss more than one dose.
