GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
Sore throat is also a symptom of infection, .. but that would MOST LIKELY also symptomize with a fever. So, unless there is a fever, it is not likely that.
I just wonder if it is GERD with ONLY the sore throat as a symptom. Should be some other signs/symptoms as well.
Regardless of what it is, .. your doctor should continue to diagnose since GERD treatment does not seem to be effective in treating the sore throat.
I would go back to the doc and unless he has some opinion that is acceptable, if he does not persue an effective treatment plan, change doctors. If it is GERD, his treatment plan is not working.
I also have GERD and I am taking Protonix 3 times a day along with Zantax and tons of Tums.
The sore throat is caused by acid refluxing into the throat. I have it also. I can totally emphasize with you. This last week has been torturous. I feel like I have a volcano in my stomach and it is constantly erupting hot Lava all the way up to my throat. The meds take the edge off for a short time and I am taking more than I should. I have decided to look into a new incision less surgery. I have an appointment tomorrow with the doctor. Here is the web site in case you want to find out about it.

Also try drinking some aloe juice every day. It is very soothing and may heal your throat at least somewhat and give you a little relief.
I get quite hoarse and it tires me to talk sometimes where I am losing my voice. Sore throat and cough IS a symptom of GERD because if you have burning stomach acid in your throat it does make it sore!
I do think though your doctor should send you for a scope to find out what it is.
I still worry after having a scope to why no medication will help me and the doctors still telling me there is nothing wrong with me apart from GERD.
I don't find ant acids really work for me they just seem to make it worse especially the chewable ones they make me feel like I have just eaten something fizzy so thats no help.
So far I have found nothing that really helps except to avoid spicy foods, too much pepsi makes it worse (fizzy drinks) onions, and pepper.
try and work out if you are eating and drinking things that are not helping. spicy foods and carbonated drinks are the main ones.
Nexium should heal your throat, but be sure of the diagnosis because the prolonged irritation can cause throat cancer.
You might keep a food diary of which foods make it worse. Small meals are the key.
I get it so bad when I have fats or lettuce, cilantro and fresh basil that even a sliver of one of those causes acid to literally squirt up my throat and into my lungs.
I have almost drowned in my own stomach acid three times!
You really must pay attention to this...my weapon of last resort is a swig of Mylanta. I get it in the mint flavor and keep it in the fridge...makes it almost refreshing! lol
Many, many nights I could not sleep because of the contents of my evening meal...make lunch your major meal and eat light for dinner. I am careful to eat by 6 so I can get to sleep by 9 or 10...its a pain...
Take care!~n
I get an endoscopy done every two years to check out my esophagus and stomach, Also they remove polyps if there are any to prevent cancer.
Might want to check into aciphex and forget the nexium
For flareups Gaviscon is the best think or pepcid AC.
Hope you feel better
