GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
Forever you will have to stick to all the rules. Especially if you have gastritis. Once the lining of the stomach is damaged, it is forever that way. the esophagus is more forgiving and you can actually treat yourself to some foods with only the heartburn issue. gastritis is totally different.
I dont take anything now and didnt have to much at all with my heartburn issue. I managed it totally with diet. I had gastritis once and swore I would never have it again and the key with gastritis is to nip it in the bud immediately so the damage to the stomach is minimized. I had mild gastritis, nothing like what some people have and it only lasted 2 weeks and I can still after 2 years that something has changed in my stomach and I notice it if I have black pepper. it is mild but it is still there. So the lining changes.
So stay on the PPI until you know you can always stick to a plain diet. Then slowly wean off and move down to Zantac etc.
You will get back to a good place again. it just takes a lot of work and is tiring! Just do it and stick to it forever!
