No idea how they compare to PPIs concerning all the recent news about the dangers of PPIs. I would not want to take either longterm.
I prefer Zantac. I am pretty sure it works better than Pepcid but it is good to see a doctor that starts out with this type of acid suppression for a change.
Being on a PPI does not cause esophageal cancer. Having chronic relfux can lead to barretts esophagus and then it can become esophageal cancer. Kidney disease and bone loss are the most common potential problems with acid suppression. More so with a PPI.
Acid suppression over the long term using a PPI or Zantac etc is not wise but Zantac and Pepcid are considered safer.
This issue is managed best with a careful diet and managing anxiety and any mental health issues. Anxiety can cause reflux regularly.
Reflux problems are most often caused by lifestyle and or a mechanical problem like a hiatal hernnia.
