GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.

I have had stomach pain and constipation almost daily my entire life.
About 4 years ago, the pain became so unbearable that I went to the doctor's. I was diagnosed with GERD.
I have taken 4 different medications for my stomach problems. Each medication has worked for about a year and then become ineffective. I'm currently taking Dexilant, and it's no longer working for me.
I have tested negative for celiac disease and h.pylori, and no stomach ulcers or gallbladder abnormalitites have been found. All that has been found is a hiatal hernia, which my doctor didn't seem too concerned about. He said that he didn't believe it was the cause of my symptoms.
I don't understand how everything can come back negative when I have extreme stomach pain, chest pain, and nausea every day. As well as difficulty swallowing and the sensation of food coming back up. I can't be hallucinating, right?
The worst part is, I have tried so hard to follow my doctor's advice/change my lifestyle and I still feel sick all the time.
It makes me feel helpless. Like I have no control.
In addition to my GERD symptoms, I experience lightheadedness and dizziness almost daily. This has been going on for about 2 years.
Every time I have a bowel movement, I'm either really constipated or having diarrhea.
I don't know what to do. Does it sound like I have the right diagnosis? Are there other tests I should request? Am I going to have to switch medications over and over again throughout my life?
How do you cope with GERD? How do you deal with the pain every day?

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

I did a barium swallowing test a couple of years ago, and they found no problem.
But when I got an upper endoscopy about a year ago, they found a hiatal hernia.
They did not seem to think much of it though.
I don't know what the next step is. I don't know if there's anything else they can do for me.
They act like there isn't.
People with med to large hernias can have more serious acid related issues but the small hernia doesnt tend to, especially if it is the sliding type.. but it can cause r heartburn/inflammation issues that can turn into stomach and gastro inflammation issues..
I always have managed this with diet and I rarely have problems now but it takes a ton of work and discipline. It took me a year and a half to figure it all out and get really good at managing it. It can get way better with a very disciplined diet and managing stress well. Most people need to prop up at night as well with a heartburn issue.
I also agree with praying lots and grammy.. get good advice from another specialist but try being extremely careful with diet for a month or so and see if you get better. You have to follow all the GERD rules and on this GERD site there are some really good threads about diet.
Good Luck
I really just wanted to give you a special blessing today! I know how hard all this stuff is. I go through it everyday too. Some days are better than others. The good days are related to what I eat! If I eat really well and stick to a clean diet I do mush better! Just like Lesley said you have to really follow the Gerd diet though that diet will vary according to your own body! But basically you need to watch everything you eat and get to know what upsets your stomach. And also like Lesley said if you have not propped up at night yet maybe that would help you too.
I just want to give you a hug because I know exactly what your going through! Hang in there and good luck with everything!
God Bless!

When was your last scope done? I also feel the difficulty swallowing issue needs to be addressed. You need to have the esophagus looked at again at the very least.
