Hi Ive been having stomach problems for a while now. Ive always gone on the gastritis board but I am getting reflux too. I also have a hiatus hernia. I am getting a lot of pain and having reflux and I don,t know what to do. What meds do you take? Have you had more success taking two PPIs a day? Ive tried one a day and two now and again. Im suposed to take two a day. Will it make much difference though? Different doctors say one, some say to take two or even 3 a day. I don,t like being on so many meds. Im going to give two a day another try though. It hurts like mad. It will calm down for a day and I think fine and I slip up and have a coffee or some other trigger. I avoid tomatoes, don,t drink or smoke and don,t eat oranges. Im not getting anywhere with healing it up. Also can the reflux go away and the stomach get back to normal? Im hoping so everyday its just driving me mad.

Im not an expert on this but since you have a hiatlal hernia you should probally watch what you eat after the gastritis heals, since the hiatal hernia could be the reason for your reflux, however alot of people have a hiatal hernia and dont know it and have no symptoms at all (according wiki). as for the meds I have had success taking 2 ppis(nexium) and rantidine at nite I have had differing oppinions on that too but the gastro said 2 is fine. i think what you should worry about is not taking 2 ppis together I have heard that is not good. even if your stomach feels normal i would still watch out because from experience Ive had gastritis twice and am healed from my second trial with gastritis but now i take it seriously and stay away from caffein, citrus, vinegar, tomatoes and only eat high fatty foods and pork/beef on special occasiond and even though i dont take medication any more i still have batch for times when Im feeling stressed. i would limit coffee to special occasions also because thats one of the reasons I got gastritis a 2nd time and i would say gastritis can sneak up on you. also I hope this helps.

Thanks grace I was drinking a lot of coffee at one time after the stomach ulcer healed. I proberly have flared this gastritis up as I thought my stomach was ok again. I keep trying to avoid triggers but I slip up. I will have to avoid them. Im not getting sleep with it.

Please do not take more medication then your doctor has prescribed for you until he gives you the okay. I have Barrett's Esophagus and I was put on a very strict diet, my bed had to change by being raised 6', and I was put on Nexium for 6 months. What is going to change your symptoms the most is going to be a change in diet and believe me, it is not easy. It caused me to lose 27 pounds but fortunately I have gone up from 100 to 103. It's a start. If you need help with the exact diet that we should be abiding by, just let me know and I will be more then happy to help you. They mostly give you the basics but there is so much more to it. When I told My GI that I was eating peanut butter sandwiches, he almost took my head off!
