GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
So, yes. I worry about what might eventually happen with my esophagus (and my stomach as well).
This can be a trial and error process and a 3 steps forward and 2 steps back type of thing. Determination and discipline are the key to this.
I'm from the southern U.S.. This means that, at the majority of restaurants,I can't eat off of the main menu. I can only eat off of the dessert and/or kid's menu(which I find embarrassing and humiliating). Some restaurants I can't even eat off of these menus. At the really rich restaurants, which I eat at once a yr. and most times not even that, the majority of the time they will let you customize something you order. There are some that won't even do this though. I can't eat at seafood restaurants for example. The only time I can have seafood is in a frozen dinner or at Chinese restaurants. When I go out I have a tendency to stick to chain restaurants that are not southern based because I have more eating options.
At the stores, that are near me, a lot of the time it's hard to find frozen dinners that I can eat. There will be occasions where none of the frozen dinners are ones I can have. In order to have a large, and good selection, to choose from I would have to travel30-40min.s away!
I can't drink Gatorade, Powerade, the majority of juices, pop and certain flavored waters. The only juices I can have are the really expensive straight up juices. So I stick to milk and water.
I can't eat pre-seasoned meat from the store and I can't eat smoked meat either.
When I order a pizza I have to order one of the two sauces that isn't a tomato base sauce in order to eat any left over slices that I might want to eat the next day. If I order it with a tomato based sauce I have to double up on my stomach medication. There are times where I not only have to double up on my stomach medication BUT I also, depending on how well(or not well)my stomach has been doing, have to chug anywhere between half a bottle of pepto bismol all the way to a bottle and then some.
There have been times where I'll,unknowingly, eat something that's slightly spicy but it's subtle so it doesn't register till it's in my stomach or I'll eat something(like a snack food) not realizing, because I forgot to read the ingredients before buying, that one of the many ingredients in there is a spicy ingredient(sometimes they'll have more than one) and I'll end up paying a price. The price I pay sometimes depends on the serving size and sometimes not. One of the(many)ways I pay is that I'll have to sleep(although I don't get much because of pain and sometimes I have trouble breathing too) on the chair(it doesn't recline). Sometimes I'll have to sleep more than one night on the chair.
