GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
Thank you so much for all your suggestions. I am at a cross road right now! My issue is not only the acid reflux made worse by certain medications like Zantac but also having breathing issues on most of them. I was reading on Ask.com that a lot of people that already have anxiety can not take Zantac so I am thinking that must be my issue. Breathing issues seem to come along with my anxiety. And I think my breathing issues on the Zantac is caused by my anxiety. Sort of like a big huge circle of crap! lol
I know that diet works really well but so hard to stick to those rules of diet on some days! I can do pretty good for even a few weeks at a time but as soon as I start eating the junk. Boy I get in trouble.
Thanks for responding to my post. I really appreciate it ladies!
Vicki.
Let us know how you do on the Pepzin GI I hope it really helps you with your Gerd!
Hugs,
Vicki.
I've no doubt that some people have rebound issues with PPIs. It's called the 'ironic effect.' Talk to your doc about trying and acid reducing med instead of a PPI. I've never heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to PPIs, but perhaps that's possible.
Anxiety will exacerbate the condition, for sure. And it could be at the root of your inability to take the meds. We all know the power of fear, (and what it feels like to be in its grip). If you've got a therapist, check it out with him or her. Try yoga and meditation. These are two of the most healing non med 'treatments' out there. No side effects, all gain.
Things will get better. You just have to sort it all out.
Grammybear, it's true that the PPIs can compromise bone health. Unfortunately, many of we GERD sufferers are stuck on these drugs longer than a few months. I'm one of those people; I've been on them for years.
The best way to offset this negative side effect is to exercise--weight bearing exercise particularly. Stretching and weight training are great, too. Exercise is great for stress relief.
I hope that your new med is a success, and you'll write a 'review.'
hugs.
I've been mostly following a gerd diet! Again mostly. I have some days that I will cheat especially with chocolates. That is my weakness. I don't ever, ever have spicy or really fatty foods!
My anxiety will get the best of me sometimes and boy the acid reflux will really get bad!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and support!
Vicki.
