GERD & Heartburn Support Group
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. If you are afflicted with GERD or heartburn, join the group and find support.
What I do know is that propping the head of my bed up at night really really helped. That and tums.
I hear lots of advice about not eating right before bed but eating at bedtime has been a routine of mine for years. I get insomnia, so that would be extra hard for me to give up.
I did find that there were a few foods that were hard to tolerate (spaghetti sauce) so I go light on those. A few others are soothing (dry toast...yes, I actually really do light dry toast...call me strange)
As I said, I only took over the counter pills for a short time. I too had had foods sort of stick in my throat, but didn't think a whole lot of it. Symptoms dramatically better in a day, and completely gone in a few days. They'd come back if I stopped the pills, which is why I went 3 weeks rather than directions for 2 weeks. (I figured what the heck...the next stop was the doctor...) I haven't had any troubles in a couple months now.
Different symptoms this time round and it is HH and reflux esophagitis.
The food sticking is exactly what I had, I thought it was Barretts esoph but had scope five weeks ago and it is the HH and reflux esoph. It is very scary - I have had this stuck feeling when I am feeling acidic for a couple of years now. It can disappear for months then it can flare up and I have to bring the stuck mouthful back up. Very awkward when you are out with friends which happened a year ago. At a reception eating a meal and a mouthful got "stuck" off to the ladies to bring it back. Lipstick all over my mouth - if anyone had come in they would have thought it was a horror movie!!
I have been precribed a high dose of PPI which I don't want to take so am going to try a high dose of Zantac and things like Slippery Elm.
Just propped my bed head last night and had no reflux.
Have you been on the Gastritis site - there is loads and loads of good stuff on it all to do with GERD and Heartburn, Hernias, it covers it all. Some of the guys on there are awsome and know what they are talking about.
I actually feel worse on omeprazole. Tummy feels full of gas so I either burp or fart. Dunno if it's the med or the gas the doc pumped into me during the endoscopy.
