Gay Parenting Support Group
Gay parenting has been an important issue over the past few years. Over 34% of lesbian mothers have at least one child residing in their home and 22% of gay men have at least one child living with them. Together there are 6 to 10 million gay parents that are caring for between 6 and 14 million children.
I have a friend who had the following experience. After getting pregnant, she went off her anti-depressants. After about a month or so, she became very depressed. Decided she didn't love her husband, and didn't want the baby. She had an abortion. She then renewed her anti-depressants, and reconciled with her husband.
I can't say the same would happen for you, but I would take that possibility into consideration.
I am a male, and so obviously I have never been pregnant. However, there was a time when I decided to try my luck without anti-depressants. I was fine for about a month. Then it was like I went over a cliff.
Again, i can't say the same would happen for you, but it is a possibility to consider.
Sorry to be a downer. I'm sure other people may offer conflicting counsel.
Five years ago when my partner got pregnant she continued to take an antidepressant. She was on Lexapro and was closely followed by her therapist and OBGYN. Our daughter was full term and has had no birth defects or any side effects of the drug.
Talk to your OBGYN and good luck to you and your partner.
