Gay parenting has been an important issue over the past few years. Over 34% of lesbian mothers have at least one child residing in their home and 22% of gay men have at least one child living with them. Together there are 6 to 10 million gay parents that are caring for between 6 and 14 million children.
I wonder if my 18 yr old son is gay. He is the oldest of 2 boys. he has never brought a girl home or gone on a date that I know of. he didn't even go to his senior prom. He hangs out with a lot of guys that really don't seem to date much either. he's pretty handsome, but not really fashion coordinated he just wears sports shorts and tshirts. I can't remember how the conversation came up but a couple of years ago my husband's mom and brother had said they would have nothing to do with him if he ever dated a member of the same sex. I was really shocked they said this and asked if they were kidding and they said no. My son is very close with these two and I worry that if he is gay, he will not ever say anything for fear of losing them. If he is, I want him to be able to be true to himself and live his life to the fullest without feeling like he has to hide who he is. maybe I am just overreacting and he is just a very private person but I worry. Can you tell me what signs you recognized once you knew?
Next, "being gay myself" I believe there is no tell-tale sign that someone is gay. I consider myself pretty straight-acting so a lot of people were surprised when I came out. The point is though; you cant really tell if someone is gay without them telling your or you finding hardcore proof; however, a mother's intuition can be very accurate.
Unfortunately the best way to find out if your son is gay is to let him tell you himself. Don't pressure him into telling you. You have to let him come out on his own. Just let him know that you will love him always and no matter what.
