Gay Men's Challenges Support Group
This community is dedicated to the challenges that gay men face, both between the partners in a relationship and from other influences (family, society, etc.). Find support and talk to others who may be facing the same challenges, and share your experience.
I didn't think anyone used this "room" of dailystrength.com. Thanks for the reply.
I left home at 18 to go off to college - from a place of loneliness to a crowded university (where I felt alone). Got out of college and moved to DC - to be around people like me, drink around people like me, find people to do "x" with like me, etc.
AND I WAS LONELY...still didn't fit it even if I was drunk at the bar.
Moved to NYC - a bigger place for all the above - lived down in the West Village a block off of Christopher (this was the early 1990s) and even with ALL the boys around me...
I WAS LONELY/FELT ALONE.
Even in the 3 relationships that now in hindsight were not appropriate for me - I was alone.
Hate all the bumper stickers about having to love yourself first but they are appropriate.
So yep, "alone" here which is not really any different than any other of my 57 years.
Thanks again for the reply and for the insight!
Again, a bumper sticker of "nothing changes if nothing changes" goes zinging through my brain!
HA HA HA!
So now I'm alone again, just like in school. I've gone full circle, relationship-wise. I'm 51 and often get the depressing feeling that I have wasted the last 30 years of my life on two users (the last one being emotionally abusive) that did not love me back. While in those relationships I was alone but at least I knew I could talk to them if I really needed the interaction.
I'm not wired to live as a single person. I live alone with my dog. Frankly, if it weren't for him I think I may have done something to harm myself. It's not my home. Because I moved out to get away from the abuse my ex-husband is in our house and I'm in someone else's home who no longer lives there because he met a great guy and moved in with him. So I never feel comfortable doing things that would help me to more at ease in the space.
I live in Atlanta. Now that my social anxiety is in check I want to meet people but with the quarantine, I simply can't. Besides, have I missed my window of opportunity to find a great partner? Am I too old, too broken, or both? Just some questions I ask myself all the time.
Hang in there, Jimbo. I know all too well that it's not easy but I have to believe that there is something better for us waiting around the corner despite our loneliness.
