One of my good friends is bi. We've messed around a few times too, but that's besides the point. Some may find it a turn off, so be prepared for that. I don't hold it against people. I understand you are shy and apprehensive, but you need to push through it. You have to put yourself out there. Not everyone will take a liking to you, but someone eventually will. If your personality is not the kind that most everyone will gravitate, then you'll just have to meet that much more people. As for the sex crazed, they're just a part of the culture, and they're not going anywhere. A lot of gays are just not ready for anything serious, including platonic conversations. If guys don't answer back on a website, they're just not into you. That's ok, move on.

On a more practical yet superficial note... men respond to visual stimuli, gay men even more so. Good for you for trying something new with your hair. Try other things, keep experimenting. I'm not saying compromise your sense of self, but effort in this department will get you noticed.

You can try finding your niche, and go from there. I'm an Asian twink, so naturally I have no problem attracting rice queens. Are you a bear, fit gorilla, otter, jock, sexy nerd, ect... In an ideal world, there are no labels. But we live in the real world. We have to weed through muck. You can't always strike gold the first time.
