I have shared this on several different topics. Since I did not like the bar or club scene for the possible boyfriend or more I would go to them and leave with whom ever I came with after only staying for a couple of hours.
However, what i did to meet people in a more personal less of a meat market settign was to have a small intimate party at my home. Inviting 10 or so people and having them bring either a date or a friend.
This did a few things, one it allowed me to meet people outside of the bar setting and see them for themselves. You had a friend in common which meant you may share other interests besides Penis and Anal exploration. Most importantly, these people get to know you and accept you for who you are.
Around the holidays I would plan a party to celebrate the season. I would invite 15+ people asking them to invite a friend or a date and one other person, asking them to bring on person. Which what happens is that you increase the potential to meet even more people, however you also may reconnect with old lost or forgotten friends.
This is how I met my husband, actually after having a party at my home I was invited to a bbq as the result. It was there that Josh and I met. We spent the entire evening chatting and playing with my one year old Chihuahua Mrs. Buttersworth.
From then he came to my door everyday for some reason or another, once he needed a sauce pot to make pasta, then the next it was alcohol for an injury etc. Each time he stayed and chatted for long periods of time. This continued for two weeks NON STOP.
Two weeks to the day we met, he came over at 1PM and sat and talked all afternoon and evening. We spoke late into the night, it was at 3 AM he asked me if I would spend my life with him. After a series of questions, I agreed. That was in July of 1996. The following day, he asked me if they ever legalized gay marriages would I marry him. I agreed. We were married on December 28th, 2010 in Cairo Egypt...
In July of 2011 we will celebrate our 15th year.
This is just what I have suggested to many people who were serious about wanting to meet someone outside of the usual gay bars and environment. I have had several people who were shy or very private use the aforementioned and they made a great number of true friends whick lead two of these individuals to meet and marry.
I am not sure if that actually helps you in some way.

I have browsed (quite a few years ago, come to think of it) online personals, and to my surprise, I saw people in my city that I know, and their profiles are full of lies. Maybe that was the turn off and what made me not go that route for dating.
I prefer good old fashion one on one meeting people, and to me there's absolutely nothing wrong with good old-fashion cruising.
Like RhyRhy, I love LifeOut. I post and comment and have many "friends" there. Great place to find user created videos and look at the 'eye candy" but I don't look for dating. Boo is such a great guy and we have all the great sex we can handle.
Previous to us getting together, I met some nice guys... a couple horror stories, but for the most part they were okay. I stay away from Craigslist though. ;)
