Don’t ask don’t tell-
The repealing of the Clinton’s administration don’t ask don’t tell has had many political individuals weighing in on the topic. Some of the most arrogant statements I have ever heard were being spewed through the lips of our elected officials.
I find that their naïve understanding of our U.S. Military history offensive. At what point do our elected officials stop trying to confuse the subjects at hand and actually start telling us, the American people the truth. It will not be the truth as they would have us believe.
Searching through the military history archives it is not long before one finds a “dishonorable discharge” from any one of the armed forces. Those individuals had excellent service careers, dedication to our “freedom and country” all the while being gay or lesbian.
Thus, at one point those very men and women were showering in communal showers with other men or women respectively without incident or attempting to rape one of those men or women. In fact there have been more complaints of inappropriate behavior from men to women than men to men or women to women.
For generations, without hesitation gay men and women signed up for the military. Selflessly, they offered up to their country the only thing that they had left to give, that was their lives. So the freedom that these very distorted and or biased political officials have today is due partly to those very brave homosexuals that they wish to condemn.
Still to this day gays and lesbians are often the first to sign up when there is the sign of crisis or potential threat to our great country. In the past, most recent in fact they have had to lie about who and what they are. They could not share the pride and sorrows which are bestowed on all couples. For them, it must be kept secret.
The gays and lesbians were forced to have “code words” for identifying one another. My favorite one is “are you a friend of Dorothy”? Which is to have been referencing Ms. Judy Garland’s character in the Wizard of Oz. Their meeting places were in the worst part of town, often in neighborhoods where no one wanted to be after dark. Not even the residents.
Still they managed to find each other and not for sex which is so often the beliefs of heterosexuals. They found each other for the support, kindness from someone who understands, realizes and feels the same day to day struggles that they endure.
Yet, no matter what feelings they were forced to hide they still managed to, without hesitation or delay, rise to task of defending our country when they were called.
Gays and lesbians stand side by side with those very heterosexuals who have unknowingly placed their lives in the hands of homosexuals. For any rational politician to argue that a gay man is weaker than a “straight” appears to me as if they are not only naive but a bit out of touch with reality.
When we as a society can or are willing to accept people for who they are, what they mean to us and not who they are attracted to or love then we will have achieved the freedom that we are so proud of. It is not just for those who are heterosexuals, it is not for those with disabilities of any type and it is not for the gays and lesbians. It is for everyone, every American to experience a true, unconditional sense of freedom and to feel that what they have sacrificed, what they have endured and what they gain has all been worth it. And I do not mean just for the select few, but for all Americans.
I have never attempted to be closed minded. I have never had the experiences or feelings toward females as a heterosexual male does so I cannot know with certainty those exact feelings. I can however realize what my feelings are as a gay male and believe that our feelings must be very similar.
With that being said, I must express that I cannot fathom why anyone would believe that if you are a gay or lesbian that you must want every male or female that you encounter. If that is how heterosexuals feel, then it must make getting through the day extremely difficult.
Why should we as a gays and lesbians be defined by our sexuality? There is no real purpose behind it, nor does it serve any good for us or those around us, no matter what their sexuality is.
There will come a day when gays and lesbians will all be given the basic, fundamental rights. Those rights will be defended not by just us, but the Constitution and a true Bill of Rights.
