Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Hope you recover soon.
Hi! I have been to two different GI doctors. The first one was soo mean and of no help! All her kept saying was that I was intentionally not, which is why I lost 30 pounds, and that I have an eating disorder. That is so NOT the case! I love to eat. I am so nauseous and in so much pain and it almost constantly, especially after eating, feels like my upper stomach going to my chest is on fire. I hate it! After my mom and I got annoyed with him we switched to this really nice lady and so far, I've only had one visit with her, she seems nice. I explained to her my situation, told her I think it's gastritis and that even a friend of mine who's a nurse said it's probably gastritis, she agreed. I'm going in for an endoscopy on January 6. With medicines, I have tried so many different things. I took Omeprazole for about a month and three days ago I stopped taking it because I didn't think I saw a difference and I read all these bad things that could happen if you stay on that medicine for too long (constipation, which is already a problem, all the way to cancers!). Do you think I should have stopped taking it? I take 3 DGL Licorice chews a day, 1 20 minutes before lunch and 2 20 minutes before dinner. I take a Tums before breakfast and throughout the day as needed, but I've been noticing that I think the Tums are starting to lose their potency. I went out and bought alternative at my local health foods store called Gaia Reflux Relief (it got good reviews on Amazon!) and I haven't tried them yet because I'm afraid they may have a bad interaction with all the other herbal supplements I'm taking (I also take 10-20 drops of marshmallow root extract 2 times a day and I've only tried a slippery elm lozenge once). Rosebrook, I completely understand. My stomach has been in so much that it is so hard to even go out and run errands. I feel most comfortable staying home either sitting up in bed (but then I feel like I'm missing out on having fun with my mom and younger brother) or sitting in my living room playing video games with my mom and brother. I lost 30 pounds, too. And I was only 104 to begin with because I'm really short! I need to gain weight but I just keep losing! I get really, really bad acid reflux at night, but I want to be able to eat at night but I'm so nauseous. Do either of you have any advice?
Thank you!
Caleigh :)
I'm 66, and I'm having a hard time dealing with this terrible disease, I can imagine how you must feel, but the younger the faster you will heal, just be patience. I was on PPI for 7 months, my condition was so bad. Maybe you new dr will give some better options.
some suggestions from me on your diet, based on my experience :
1. stop the brown rice. although it is healthier than white rice, it is more difficult to digest, causing indigestion and bloating issues. You should take white rice, or porridge instead.
2. stop the 2 veggies that you mentioned - they caused gas - broccoli and cabbage. instead eat cooked green vegetables. do avoid salads at all cost.
3. don't eat too much "ginger-bread" pancakes. I had the same reaction to them - bloatedness. it is funny since ginger is supposed to be good for us but too much ginger will cause bloatedness.
4. continue with a PPI. if you don't like omeprozole, you can take Nexium. it will cause less bloatedness.
5. stop all cold drinks.
6. stop all tea and coffee. even hot chocolate with (some milk) sometimes cause issues.
7. do take domperidone for 2 weeks before each meal (30 mins before the meal). it will help with your nausea.
and yes, young people like you do get well in a flash. so don't worry, it will pass - faster than you realised. Good luck!
I've been eating gluten free cream of rice, is that good? Which cooked green veggies do you mean? Also, I only eat small amounts of the gingerbread pancake at a time, so I don't think it does much to me. I stopped taking the Omeprazole because it stopped working and my burning in my stomach and acid reflux got a lot worse. Now I'm just taking DGL Licorice, sometimes marshmallow root extract, sometimes dandelion root extract, and Tums throughout the day. I'm also contemplating starting Pepcid. I only drink, like, one cup of tea in 2-3 days, and it's Honey Vanilla Chamomile. I mainly drink water, coconut water, and I'm going to try almond milk. Is Domperidone a prescription? Also, I've been told to eat 7-8 small meals a day. What constitutes as a small meal?
Thank you!
Caleigh :)
I stopped Dexilant after 7 months cause when I started taking Pepzin GI it helped to heal my stomach lining, and the acid, so one day I didn't take it and I felt better without taking it, but I take Pepcid twice a day morning and nights. And digestive enzenges before each meal.
And I keep a food diary where I post everything I eat, and what's good and bad for me. And when I start new supplement. DRG didn't do anything for me either. I went to a natrupath and I go to accupunture twice a week.thats helps so much.
Hope you get better.
I will try to answer your questions as well as I can.
1. I've been eating gluten free cream of rice, is that good?
Hmm... I don't know about the cream of rice. is it too creamy and do you like it? I cannot take creamy rice like risotto. but it is up to the individual. My advice: if it is too rich for you, just take plain white rice. it is completely harmless for gastritis patients.
2. Which cooked green veggies do you mean?
Spinach and Asian vegetables like kai lan. We have a lot of green leafy vegetables here in Asia, but I am not sure about US.
But potatoes are also completely harmless.
3.. I stopped taking the Omeprazole because it stopped working and my burning in my stomach and acid reflux got a lot worse.
You really need a PPI. If omeprazole does not work, try Nexium or something else. it will coat your stomach and protect it too, besides reducing the acid in your stomach. But if you are taking prevaid, then you might not need it. do ask your doctor for an expert opinion.
4. I only drink, like, one cup of tea in 2-3 days, and it's Honey Vanilla Chamomile. I mainly drink water, coconut water, and I'm going to try almond milk.
Great, chamomile tea is soothing. but I am not sure about almond milk. but if you like it and if it does not cause you any problem, do continue. but I wont try it if I were you. Because if I keep trying 1-2 new things every day, how do I know which food item or med is the one causing the problem? And how do I know which one works and which one does not?
5. Is Domperidone a prescription?
Not in my country, I can just buy it OTC. it works wonders and I usually have a good appetite after taking domperidone.
6. Also, I've been told to eat 7-8 small meals a day. What constitutes as a small meal?
No need to over-engineer this. I eat 3 normal meals a day (breakfast lunch and dinner). I adjust my amount by listening to my stomach and stop when I am 80% full. Do remember not to drink too much fluid during meals as it will interfere with your digestion.
In between my meals, when I am hungry, I wlll snack on biscuits and bread.
But to answer your question: a small meal is like 50%-60% of what you usually eat when you were well.
it might work for someone but it does not work for me. if I eat this way, I will be forever hungry, weak and listless. but like I say, listen to your body and your stomach. don't force yourself to follow any formulae but eat when you are hungry and stop when you cannot eat anymore. and EAT SLOWLY. Chew your food well.
Good luck!
Hope we all heal this year. Are you gluten free?
The advice I would give you is to stay away from veggies, they are hard to degest, and rice too.
I eat bananas, plain oatmeal (no milk, made with water, no sugar) sometimes i add honey. I also boiled eggs and unsalted crackers. for me, these are the things I have found that don't cause me to get sick.
the PPI also is one of the biggest helps I have found.
Other than that I find that Gaviscon seems to help me, and aloe vera juice. the inner fillet stuff.
I used to drink a lot of coconut water too but now that I am somewhat better i don't. drinking water before even upset my stomach it was so bad. now though I'm okay drinking water.
I've been sick for 17 and ahalf months now :(
I sit in bed almost all day. Yesterday I played guitar a bit and
yesterday i played guitar and practiced my singing and man my stomach was cramped up and sick after that. this sucks! why haven't they found a cure for this!!! isn't there antibiotics or something that can help heal the stomach? or steroids?
300 pills of domperidone for only 70 bucks? That is cheap.
I paid USD15 for 30 pills.
And no, I have not heard of Iberogadt... let me google it and find out, thanks!
I am not gluten free, but I doubt if gluten has got to do with my bloated issues, and in any case, since my "to avoid list of food" is as long as the great wall of China, I try not to add to the list..... but do you get les bloated issues after you avoid gluten? it may be worth a try for me...
the issue is, my stomach can get bloated one day when I have been eating the SAME food as all other days. Its crazy.
